Pc, you're showing where number sometimes don't tell the whole tale. Yep, I see your numbers and I would counter IT'S EFFING DUKE. Let them say they won an ACC title 20 years ago. Who is it hurting?

SEC Coaches? People are right, it's tough. Based on right now?

Miles, Richt, Tuberville, Meyer, Croom, Saban, Fulmer, Spurrier, Brooks, Johnson,  Nutt, Petrino.

I don't think Miles is a great coach. But you can't deny what he's done.

Richt's almost self explanatory. Tuberville, to a lesser degree.

Meyer. Because of the recent NC he's there. He's going to get Tebow killed though.

Croom doesn't get nearly enough credit. Saban, for now, is getting too much.

Fulmer, eh. Spurrier, less than eh. So much unrealized promise from SC.

Same with Brooks and Kentucky. I remember 0607 touting Kentucky. I told him that if you want to tout them like big boys you have to give up your underdog card. They should have kept the underdog card.

Johnson is dealt a Vanderbilt hand. Which is to say 2-7, offsuit.

Nutt had 2 first round running backs and did Dick with them.

Petrino's new so he's more of an N/A.

Sounds like PC has a cack up in his jaw about the Ol Ball Coach. Thou doth protest too much.

Granted, Spurrier hasn't done what I expected him to at SC. But, his accomplishment at Duke, name another Duke coach in the Modern Era that pulled off what he did. You can't. As far as accomplishments go, Spurrier is head and shoulders above the rest of the SEC coaches. But you want a current list:

1. Meyer- the hottest commoditiy in college football right now. Awesome recruiter, incredible game day coach.

2. Miles- still riding the success of Saban's tenure, but you have to call the plays, and Saban wasn't on the sideline against tOSU.

3. Richt-may have his first NC this year. Until then....he's third.

4. Saban- hate the guy, don't trust his character, but he's a winner and one helluva recruiter. Alabama will be making noise in 09.

5. Spurrier-how the mighty have fallen. But he's at SC. Any time you are concerned about playing the Gamecocks, it's because of Darth Visor.

6. Fulmer- great coach, Needs to regain control of his program a bit, but, he won the SEC East last year with possibly the worst team the Vols have fielded in 10 years.

7.Tubberville- I loathe this guy and how he screwed Ole Miss. But, he's a great coach, a gambler, and damn lucky to boot. I really just hate him because he has UF's number.

8.Croom- It's amazing he's still there. Good thing, he's a helluva coach. Now if he could have facilities worthy of his coaching, MSU would be feared.

9.Johnson- anybody who can win an average of 5 games a year at Vandy should be coach of the year. Does more with less than anybody in the country.

10. Brooks- good guy, has trouble recruiting at a basketball school. Should take nothing away when he retires. Great job last year with the Wildcats.

11. Nutt- only because I have to rank him. I think he's oveerated.

12. Petrino- about to find out what coaching in the SEC is all about.....unless he runs away like he did from the Falcons. Lost any respect I had for him. He and Nutt will be battling for the cellar of the SEC west.

First of all I want to say I think the SEC has a great group of quality coaches and they all derserve their jobs at the moment. I did my rankings based on who I would hire if I was an AD at an SEC school and they were all on the open market starting today. Here goes nothing..........

1. Meyer-FL

2. Richt-UGA

3. Petrino-AR

4. Saban-AL

5. Spurrier-USC

6. Miles-LSU

7. Fulmer-Tenn

8. Nutt- Ole Miss

9. Brooks- Ky

10. Johnson- Vandy

11. Tuberville -Aubie

12. Croom-Miss St.

Great Post War Eagle and don't hate on me about Tuberville. I know he is a winner, just never been a fan.

But, his accomplishment at Duke, name another Duke coach in the Modern Era that pulled off what he did. You can't.
How about Fred Goldsmith, of all people. In 1994, AFTER FSU joined the ACC, he led Duke to a 7-0 start and a #16 ranking. Spurrier never had Duke ranked that high. Following a loss to FSU, Duke beat #13 Virginia to get to 8-1 before losing 2 tight games, 24-23 to NC State and 41-40 to UNC. They ended up in what is now the Outback Bowl, where they lost to Wisconsin 34-21. The previous 2 years, they won 3 and 2 games and Goldsmith got them to the Outback Bowl in 94. Very impressive.  I would think a trip to the Outback Bowl means more than a trip to the All American Bowl. Seems like Goldsmith had the better year.

Why not? Who else has done it at Duke? If it were so easy, you'd think it would have been done more than once. Ohio State has went to National Championship games, and gained #1 rankings for playing much less.

bookdawg,

See the above post.

Thanks for all the feedback.  What I have been able to decipher so far is that the rankings have a lot to do with "likes or dislikes" versus "records".  I have got to get back to work, but if anyone has time, put the record of wins and losses by each coach while coaching in the SEC.  May or may not change a few minds.

Excellent point....this school was on the same type of probation as Alabama..no bowls, reduction of scholarships..the whole 9 yards...this guy turns it around in three years!!!!!

With half of the resources and support Alabama has...truly a great story with very little story being told about it...I guess the SEC press only likes the scandals and talk about thier high profile programs..to bad...This guy should have won coach of the year..truly remarkable job down there..
