Just want to know will our QB competition be a fair one...on one hand we extended A. Smith's contract and on the other we did signed Hill for 3 yrs despite the difference in dollar amount. Will the salary play into a factor here? I really want the best QB to start, not the most upsided.

With the recent news that both Nolan and Martz expect J.T. O'Sullivan (Go AGS!) to be in the thick of things as well, one might also ask whether or not its a fair race because of Martz's favoritism of J.T. (Martz is the one who 'brought' him to San Francisco, and has heaped praise on him, despite his journeyman status)
I think though, that with his job on the line, Nolan will make sure that the QB with the best chance to give us a winning season will be out there, regardless of salary.

I think this wont be a fair competition , especially for Shaun Hill. First I think Alex Smith still is Mike Nolan's favorite QB on this team, despite all the problems that they had a year ago. Second J.T. O'Sullivan was brought by Mike Martz so i think he want him in the starting lineup. So Shaun Hill is going to be the looser in this battle , Im not saying that he is the worst of all , what im saying is that i dont think he is going to have a shot at starting QB right now. Maybe the 49ers are going to give one more chance to Alex Smith ,after all the starting job was him to loose since he was drafted , if he fails the job will be J.T. O'Sullivan because he is Mike Martz kid, if he cant handle the pressure it will be given to Shaun Hill a chance to start. I think he might be like a Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, Jake Delhome , a undrafted Free Agent who can excel in the pro level ,all he needs is a chance to start, he showed us last season what he can make, after all he still needs to lose his first game as starter.

i personally want Alex Smith to win the battle. he was doing great 2 years ago with turner as OC. the line last year was garbage, recievers were ok and thats being nice, and Frank Gore was injured and cant carry the whole team by himself. the O line has been upgraded in my opinion because of a couple reasons, 1. jennings moves to RT while staley goes to left and he got really good as the season ended 2. snyder is going to be a starter and i think he will do good as a full time starter(LG) 3. i hope that are rookie guard can get the starting RG position from baas and i think he can because of baas's injury(people say he is similar to a young Larry Allen, lets all hope thats true and he shows it) 4. we got 2 OL coaches. the recievers are better then last year but still not great like we all wanted. frank gore is healthy and doesnt have to go through with all the drama he had to go through last year. i feel sorry for him and wish him nothing but the best. martz can make miracles and i hope he does so with the 49ers.
my prediction this year is 8-8 maybe 9-7. lets hope the offense can get off to a great start and i am HELLA excited with the defense. everyone is getting better together and plus we got 1 year under our belt with the system so thats good.

If I was are OC I would have a three way battle 4 are starting QB I would judge wat Smith-hill-O'Sullivan and how they show there skills with ""frank-Vernon-Bruce-Johnson-lel ie- and how they play well together as a team ''remember there is no I -Team''

If you read some of the interviews that Nolan has done you'll notice that he mentions Hill before Smith again and again. Some are speculating (and its a long shot) that is a freudian slip.
For those wondering what that is its basically a slip of the tongue believed to be driven by the unconscious mind. Basically they think that because he is mentioning Hill first he may actually prefer him or already be thinking of him as the number 1 guy.
Again, its a long shot. I just figured I would throw it out there!

good thread.
I personally believe that no this isn't a "fair" competition.Mike Nolans' and Alex Smiths' fate on the 49ers are tied together. Alex being Nolans' first draft pick ,and the whole mess that was picking either him or Rodgers, right away tied them together. What will make this worse for him if Alex doesnt come around this year is if Rodgers in GB has a good year.Basicly Alex Smith is this teams starter ,and will be going into the regular season. However that doesnt mean that is Alex is faultering that he wont have a short leash. Nolan will start Smith, with Hill as the backup, and O'Sullivan as 3rd string. But as I said Smith can and will get pulled easily. Remember Nolan is most likely coaching for his job this year, and I dont think he will hesitate to make any changes he deems necessary to help save his job. On that note I'll throw in here that I really like Nolan and hope that he stays, which in turn even more I hope that the 49ers have a winning season. And I do beleive they have the talent to have one. So go 9ers!!! And let's all cheer on Smith, he's got the talent, but a little positive reenforcement never hurts.

Most likely not.
Competition breeds excellence, hopefully.
I think this "open competition" for the starting job at QB is just a way for the coaching staff to put a little fire under Smith's ass. Maybe, just maybe, if they can put enough pressure on him, he will start to pull through and perform again. Unfortunately, I believe salary IS the biggest factor here. To draw a parallel with the SF Giants, look at Zito. Someone not earning his salary would have been demoted to the minors a long time ago.
The Niners don't want to admit to a bad signing or pick in Alex Smith and will do everything they can to get him to turn it around. And I truly hope that he does, and maybe down the line he WILL have what it takes to be our #1 QB, and hopefully that day comes sooner than later.

I belive this will be a fair competition between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. They are just trying to create some more competition by trowing J.T. O'Sullivan into the mix. I know Mike Martz brought J.T. over from Detriot but he is a carrer back-up and nothing more.
I beleive that Alex Smith has the advantage becuase for what ever reason Shaun Hill never seems to perform as well during practices and drills. He Has shown that he can get it done during game time though.
I beleive Smith will win out for the starting job and Hill will be the backup wth J.T. being the third option.
