Between 2003 & 2006, the Penguins were fortunate to have the #1 or #2 overall picks in the draft. That's 4 years of futility. The Flyers brain trust would never allow that to happen.
The Flyers had a terrible season last year. Ed Snider, Peter Luukko & Paul Holmgren didn't stand pat and wait for another terrible year, which would have been the Penguins' modus operandi. They went out, spent money on Danny Brière, made 2 very shrewd deals with Nashville, stole Braydon Coburn from Don Waddell, brought leadership (Smith), grit (Thoresen) & skill (Lupul) from Edmonton, created some chemistry by adding Vaclav Prospal at the trade deadline, and didn't panic with their young, skilled core
With all those high end draft picks, the Penguins should be a better team. I'm not sure they are.
