You are absolutely correct rcr_31!  Acosta would have had to pitch the entire 9th in that situation to get the save.  He did not, as he only pitched 2/3 of an inning.  Good catch!

Depends...if Acosta came on in the 9th alone and got three outs, then he should get the save. Also, if there were more than one runner on base, again, he would get the save. It depends on the situation that he was in entering the game. Of course, the official scorer can award a save or not basically based on what they think is the right thing (the whole 'spirit of the rules' rule).
Re-reading the glogs (I didn't get to see the game tonight), there wasn't anyone on base, so it'd fall under the spirit of the rules b/s rule. I would guess that later on MLB will probably take away the save.

OMG, what in the world is up with this sorry Padres team! Dude, they need to get rid of sorry ass Khalil Greene. Getting paid 4.5 million to hit a pathetic 2.06 theres only 3 decent hitters on this team in Giles, Gonzo and Kouz. The rest are a joke. What is sad is that there not necessarily a bad hitting team, its just that they somehow cant hit with runners in scoring position. Most games they always out hit their opponent but always strand about 9 runners on average. How sad

Why is it not a save again? As long as the pitcher recorded one out in last nights situation he would get the save. Since when did they have to pitch the full inning??

The pitcher has to pitch to the potential tying run to get the save...it does not matter if he gets 1, 2 or 3 outs.

Im a huge Braves Fan...and i have to admit that he is right it is not a save for Acosta because he did not pitch the enitre 9th inning...so therefore he does not deserve credit for the save it technically goes to the last person to pitch a full inning

Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:

Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and

(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

- (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or

- (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or

- (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

thanks for the official word there.. since noone was on base and atl was up by three, acosta's 2/3 inning's work technically should not qualify as a save
