Ovechkin for sure, he’s the most complete player in the league right now. However, if lundqvist or price were there, I would have chosen them. And racecar, you can’t say a goalie is great cuz his team is in the conference finals, my argument for that is just 2 words……..RAY EMERY!!!!!!

If we were talking about current players in their prime, I would pick Lidstrom.  Since we're talking about today, my choice is Datsyuk.

I know I'm following the "Homer Pick" trend, but it you watch in on a nightly basis...you'd know why.  He gets it done at both ends of the ice and makes his teammates even better.  Also, he plays in every situation and does a great job.  Realistically, he may be the best all around player in the league....that's probably why he was 4th in overall points, 1st in +/-, a Seilke finalist, a Lady Byng finalist, etc.....

The first thing a team needs is solid goaltending so my first pick would be Henrik Lundqvist.  My second pick would be Jarome Iginla for his leadership.

Second choice would be Vinny Lecavalier.  Why isn't he up there?  And why is Dany Heatley?  Nobody in their right mind would build a team around him!  Alfredsson or Spezza, maybe, but Heatley?  No way!st there is a limited number of choices. 2nd I said I basically selected a few random guys to get things started. 3rd this is why I put "other" as a choice so I could hear other opinions. But fourth Heatly was 8th in golas scored,  17th in total points, 4th in points & goals for LW's, but MOST importantly he was 3rd overall (1st amongst LW's) in +/- with a plus 33. To me +/- is a very telling stat. So while Ovechkin was still my choice, and there are ALOT of other really good choices to be argued, having Heatly on the list is hardly unthinkable

I would have a really tough time choosing between Malkin and Ovechkin, but if I had to choose right now I'd probably say Ovechkin.  Second I'd go with either Lundqvist or Price.

I think it depends upon how long we are talking.  If it is building for a 1-3 year run then I would start with the goaltender.  If you are talking about building a team for 5-10 years then I might take the top flight forward.  Anything longer than that and I would take the best  young defenseman.

I'd have to start a team with Derek Boogaard.  Every new team needs a wildly popular enforcer to put butts in the seats until the team gets enough game to draw fans on hockey merit.

On a less warped note, I'd have to go with Nicklas Lidstrom.  That guy is one studly defenseman, and sure doesn't play anywhere near his age.  Having Jacques Lemaire as coach would also be mandatory for a new team.  Lemaire is at his best with expansion or rebuilding teams with players that aren't used to playing together.  His coaching goes downhill once a team gets an established core of players (he keeps juggling the lines around, then wonders why there's no consistency in play) but he's probably the best in NHL history for getting a ragtag collection of players to overachieve.

If I had to start a new CBS account, I'd have to steal a page from OldMud's playbook and go with a Spinal Tap an avatar (either Shark Sandwich or Intravenus DeMilo:)

wow i definitely thought id be the first to say Mike Richards...yea homer vote but i dont watch the rest of the league that much...the kids versatile. he can score, plays great defense, bang the boards, can run the point on the PP, and is great on the PK and hes a good leader...i expect to see that C on his sweater next year

Nate, while I don’t think that heatley is the best player in the league, he definitely belongs on this list. He’s young, and other than ovechkin, is easily the best pure goal scorer in the league. If he hadn’t missed 5 or 6 weeks this year, he would have had 3 straight 50 goal seasons, maybe it’s just me, but that’s pretty impressive. Not to take anything away from any of the current Flyers, but he’d be the best player on your team.

I'm definitely in the minority here but I'd pick Paul Stastny. Peter was in my top ten all time favorite players. He was better than Ron Francis and could skate like Pavel Bure. He was a poor man's Gretzky. I think with him mentoring by Peter, that you actually two for one. Leadership and working to make the others around him better. Also, he is in the top 7 best young players in the league and may outlast the current dynamically gifted pure talent of Ovechkin and Crosby.

I've changed my mind, if I was starting a team right now I would take the girl in Da_Bol's avatar as my first selection

SO let's add a new twist if anyone has the gumption. There are 30 teams in teh NHL, forget team affiliation so to speak. What if we stripped everyone and started brand new with a "free agent" draft so to speak. Who would you take with the number 1 overall pick (that is what we did here) but then who do you take 2 - 30 and in what order. Let's do it this way, I'll choose the number one overall pick based on who is leading the poll right now, then who ever get's in here next gets to choose the second pick, lets see what we have by the end and lets TRY to see if we can do this with no one choosing more than once. Copy and paste the list and put your selection in your slot, then once you choose a selection put in the next slot with a "?" next to it. So I will choose first and then the #2 spot will have a "?" etc.. etc...

  1. Alexander Ovechkin
  2. ?

I put other even though I really like the first three on the list, followed by Pavel Datsyuk. Against the Avalanche, he made goal scoring look so easy and that's hard to do.  Without taking youth into consideration though, I would say Kiprusoff for myself.  The guy has probably one of the weakest teams in the NHL minus Phaneuf and Iginla, but he's a threat to shut out the other team every night.  Lord knows I've been to three NHL games and all three the Flames beat the Wild because of the man between the pipes.  If I couldn't get the three kids and the superstar aforementioned, I'd have to go with Kip.
