The league will consider rule changes to the "Hack-a-Shaq" strategy that was used extensively against Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs. Stern said fouls away from the basketball and use of replay for game clock malfunctions - something that would have reversed a mistake in Game 2 of the current Orlando-Detroit series - will be on the docket when the NBA Competition Committee meets later this month in Orlando, Fla.
The Spurs repeatedly fouled O'Neal away from the ball both to put a poor free-throw shooter at the line and disrupt Phoenix's offensive rhythm. The tactic worked on both counts as O'Neal missed 32 of 64 free throws in the series (50 percent) and several Suns, including Steve Nash, admitted the ploy affected Phoenix's flow.

There's no way they can rightfully stop it.
The only solution to Hack a Shaq is for Shaquille O'Neal to learn how to shoot free throws. Since he's just wasting away and gaining weight and collecting paychecks he's not going to learn .. therefore the ploy will continue to be exploited. Let's face it .. the only thing cheap about the Hack a Shaq strategy is that after fifteen or so years in the league Shaq still can't make 50 percent of his free throws.
The Spurs tried it on Tyson Chandler in game one and he made his two free throws. They haven't used it since.

Im in the same line of thought of you on this.
Im just reporting on what is happening on the thread but my opinion is that players in the NBA should be good enough to convert...
But at the same time fouling is technically against the rules, and exploiting a teams weakness by fouling is cheap...
There are two sides to it.

I am in complete agreement with you Hornets. There is no excuse for a professional basketball player shooting under 60% from the foul line. It shows a lack of effort, which Shaq is notorious for. If he can't shoot free throws, the coach should keep him out of the game during crunch time. It is not the league's responsibility to change the rules because some of these guys are too lazy to learn how to shoot free throws...

They also tried it on David West but he knocked his down too, the same night he went off on them....

there is no chance that they will cut it. it is part of the game. if shaq was to be super effective. learn to shoot free throws. even if it is like shooting a tennis ball.

This is BS. It wasn't a problem when this started when he was playing for the Lakers then the Heat. Now all of a sudden when he play for the Suns, it's a problem. If the Lakers and the Heat had to deal with it, then so should te Suns.

You know what, if a team is to lazy to play defense, and shaq is too lazy to learn how to shoot free throws. So be it, here's the thing, if a team shoots 50% they are usually going to win. So unless they are using it when he is going in for a dunk, this is not really a very good strategy. And that is not what they are talking about in going after fouls away from the ball so... it's a moot point.

Too lazy to practice free throws? You guys are morons. For as long as Shaq has played basketball, don't you think he has tried to work on his single most important flaw? You idiots actually think Shaq never practices free throws? If the man can't make his free throws in the 10+ years he has been in the league, he will never learn.
Hack a Shaq should be legal, when he has the ball that is. To foul him off the ball, like right when the ball is thrown in, is middle school tactics. This is the NBA, crowds pay for their entertainment, not to see some 300+ lb man go to the line every possession.
The Spurs are dirty, and Pop's hitmen (Horry, Thomas, etc.) have no role on their team besides to go out and waste their fouls. Come play for Pop! So the only game time you will have is to go down and push Shaq in the chest when the ball is inbounded!
The game is getting boring and horrible, I know I know, if I don't like it, don't watch it right? Well I don't watch it, but this is a message board where people can vent their thoughts, so get over it.

Derekross05 Obviously u're the moron...
How can someone practice free throws and never improve ? we're not saying he must knock them all out, but at least show some improvements ...
the game is not getting boring there is actually a rule saying that after 2:00 to go any intentional fouls will result a free throw and the fouled team will keep the ball... I guess u didn't know that ... Learn your facts , grow a brain then u'll have the right to call anybody moron ...

I think the answer is to go with a foul shot plus the ball to be called in cases of "BLATENT" intentional fouls not only in the last two minutes but all the time. This does not include under the hoop when the foul is hard enough to assure it does not end up being the hoop and the harm. It should also not include those fouls in the last 50 seconds when one team is trying to prolongue the game- that is great strategy and makes for interesting finishes.
But when someone not in the play is intentionally and blatently fouled in an effort to put them on the line..like hitting Shaq or anyone else, it is bad for the game. It turns an exciting ending into a boring, tedious experience that fans hate.
Compare it to the old days before the 24 second clock. A weaker team could spend the whole game stalling just to stay close- final score 28- 16.
We fans have a right to see teams go head to head down to the wire. Not pull out boring wins based on a technicality.

It is a legit strategy to exploit an opponents weakness. Don Nelson was the first coach I saw consistently use the strategy on O'Neal. Of course many others have followed. So I would disagree with the idea of changing the rule. However, I don't agree with the personal commentary from some here that O'Neal not being able to shoot free throws is a sign of laziness. It's a flaw in his game that he has tried to improve but hasn't ever been able to. I think there has only been one year he got as high as 62%. It will be interesting to see if Dwight Howard improves this aspect of his game because he is in the 50's percentage wise as well. Guys like Karl Malone who started their career as terrible free throw shooters and then became respectable (mid 70's percentage) are rare.
