I'll agree that what Osgood did was dirty.  I guess we'll have to wait and see what the league is going to do.  I do not agree, though, that both players should be fined equally, because I don't think the acts are equal.  I've read on other threads that the two hander wasn't that bad because of Osgood's padding, but I hardly believe Ribeiro was thinking that while he was swinging.

This is just my opinion, and as I've said, also biased, but I think intent is the key word.  I don't think Osgood intended to injure Ribeiro, only slow him down. But there's no other way to interpret a two hander like that, padding or not.

Here's my $0.02 ... unbiased (b/c I honestly have no love or hate for Detroit or Dallas other than to say they are both great teams now and have been well run organizations for a long time) and as a former goalie ... albeit a complete hack of a goalie Haha

I will admit though that as a former goalie, I tend to stick up for them.  Guys are always crashing into you, slashing at you under the pretense of taking a final swat at the puck even when they know it's covered, etc.  And I played in rec leagues where the skating wasn't all that great, so sometimes I never knew if the guy crashed into me on purpose or by complete accident, but it can still be frustrating as hell.  So I do tend to stick up for goalies.

Point one ... I don't think Osgood intentially butt-ended Ribeiro in the face.  I say this because I can tell you that if you are holding a goalie stick in proper form .... which Osgood was doing at the time ... you have no idea as a goalie where your butt-end is.  (I've even made saves before where the puck beat me cleanly over the right shoulder, but then I would feel the stick vibrate in my hand because the puck caught the end of it ... that is just as good a feeling as hearing the puck strike iron.  But it is equally as lucky.)  It's not like a "skater" who has there hand up near the end of the stick and has complete control over it.  However, I do believe that Osgood obviously stuck his stick out to catch Ribeiro somewhere ... and it just so happened to catch him in the face.  It is still a reckless play, but not an intentional butt-end to the face.  I hope that makes sense.

Point two ... I can't excuse Ribeiro's response.  He could have caught Osgood in the throat area, and then we would have another Simon incident on our hands.  But fortunately he didn't.  That's my problem with it.  But I can understand why he would have been "hot" about getting a stick in the face.  A better response would have been to push Osgood in the mask and knock him over, and then get ready for the melee that ensued.  I just don't like to see guys using their sticks to go after one another.

Point three ... Once again not excusing Ribeiro, but Osgood without question embellished that.  I can tell you that I have been hit by pucks, sticks, skates, etc. in that area of the goalie equipment, and you barely feel a thing.  I mean think about it ... how many goalies have caught an Al MacInnis 100+ mph slap shot in the chest area?  And then how many of them toppled over on the ice in pain?  And that slash by Ribeiro had no where near the impact of an NHL-caliber slap shot.  That equipment is built to withstand a lot more impact than that ... that much I know for sure.

So in summary, I would fine Ribeiro for intentionally slashing a player ... that has got to be taken out of the game IMO, but I wouldn't suspend him b/c in my opinion if Osgood doesn't go down and make it look so bad, people really aren't talking about this.  And as for Osgood ... since he doesn't have a history of this that I'm aware of, I would say a warning is sufficient here.  Goalies are often sticking their equipment out to send a message to onrushing players, and he just happened to catch Ribeiro in the wrong place.

Anyway, that's my take ...

As far as the Osgood/Ribero situation goes, I'd say just let it go.  Yea there was stupidity on both ends, but nobody was hurt.  There was no need for Osgood to go crashing to the ice after getting slashed in the CHEST PAD!  For God's sake man, those things are designed to protect you against a 1"x3" piece of vulcanized rubber that can travel at speeds in excess of 100mph, stop being another name for a cat and get on with it.

There is no doubt that Osgood embellished.  Not going to argue that at all.  But I don't think the NHL can just let it go.  You have a player who took a two hander at another, and to say it's ok just because he didn't get hurt doesn't jive with previous similar incidents.

I really do not want Robeiro suspended, because I want the Stars to be as close to full strength as possible. The Avalanche played the injury card as their excuse for getting mauled by the Red Wings.  I'd rather the Stars not be able to do the same.

After reading the other opinions, I tend to agree with them a little more about Osgood.....and he did definitely flop.  The thing I have a problem with, though, is the recklessness of the play on Osgood's part.  What if it caught him in the eye or a good part in the throat?  Oh well.  Its done and over with.
Well, it looks like some of the idiots found the good Flyers and Pens thread.  Its a good thing we have this thread....most of the loonies stay away, and when they do come around, their stay is short lived.  I think its because the Pens fans smell funny.

Ugh.......I'm not too happy right now.  This stinks.  Its going to take a seriously monumental effort to come back in this series.

But hey, the Flyers didn't play so badly tonight considering they were without their two top defensemen and were playing with only 5 for nearly the entire game.  Malkin was a complete nonfactor.....so that was good.  Biron was solid.

This may be the homer in me, but the Flyers aren't too far off.  They just need to continue on what they've been doing.  They CANNOT be down in the third period because the Pens will just choke the crap out of them.

COME ON, FLYERS!!!!!!!

I hear ya tark. Tough loss tonight and Hatcher was really getting me p!ssed off. If he keeps up the late punches and hits, he's going to cost this team the series.

Mike Richards has continued to step it up, but the Briere/Prospal/Hartnell line hasn't played their best. Hopefully Coburn makes it back for game 3, the Flyers were not far off tonight at all. At times they had the advantage in the game, but in the 3rd period they were slow and never got it going.

Game 3 is a must win for the Flyers if they want any chance at coming back in this series. The crowd in Philly will be nuts and the Flyers need to feed off of that right off the bat.

Let's go Flyers!

Unfortunately, guys, I think the Flyers are starting to run out of players.  Which is too bad, because when the season gets to this point, I really want to see all the teams' best players out there.

Looks like must win game three's for both the Flyers and Stars.  Although I agree with Tark, the Flyers are pretty close.  Personal bias aside,  they are skating with the Penguins, while it doesn't look that way with the Stars and Red Wings.

Yeah, Prospal's really got to pick up his play.  He needs to make space for Briere....because if he's getting knocked around without penalty, then they've got to find another way to score.

Ugh....I'm so mad right now.

I posted my thoughts on the game on the "good guy" thread, but you guys are all right ... the Flyers are playing with the Pens.  The series may be 2-0, but the play is pretty much even.  It is just that the Pens are burning the Flyers when they turn the puck over.

It is just that the Pens are burning the Flyers when they turn the puck over.Very true.....but so are the Flyers.  Both goals by the Flyers tonight were off turnovers by the Pens.

Its just that the Penguins are turning the puck over less often.

I'm starting to feel a little bit better now.  haha....should be a heck of a game on Tuesday.....and I've got baseball practice at 6.  Hopefully we'll be done before 7:30.  First game of the season on Thursday night....I'll have to start watching that game a little bit late.

Ugh, I should probably take a shower and get to bed now.....this guy is starting work tomorrow.
