Whoosh, that isn't what he is saying - read it again. He is saying that Larry Bird is the exception to the role player "rule." And while I agree that the role player/ starplayer is moot distinction, some of the best front office people in history were score-first players - Jerry West is a good example. Jerry was (probably) a wonderful teammate too, but he was much more in the Jordan mold than not. The truth of the matter is that there is no real way of discerning who will be a good front office guy by watching game play. Coaching is a little easier to see, but even still, it's almost impossible to judge how someone will work in non-athletic positions by judging their game play.
