you're wondering why no Sox fan has "chimed" in to pick a fight or give you their piece of mind. well......
1. despite what you may think about baseball fans, even Sox fans like myself, we do recognize greatness when we see it. there is no reason to start a sox-yanks bashing here.
2. you're the one instigating a fight by singling out Sox fans as whiners. essentially, you're making yourself look bad as you complain about your rival. don't be a hypocrite.
yes Mo is the greatest closer of all time.

You dont need posts from us Sox fans to know he is the greatest reliever of all time. It's unfortunate you have to generalize Sox fans by the few who come on threads like this and talk smack. No question he is the greatest reliever ever, by far.

Ok, here's a red sox fan chiming in. Mariano Rivera is the best at that position. Papelbon will take over his spot someday. Here's where I laugh at this story. Isn't it appropriate, that when Paps blew two saves that we see another BIAS article like this? HMMMMM....
From a sox fan, all the credit goes to Rivera. He's the only yankee who isn't on steroids.

You all need to lay off the "best closer in the history of baseball" talk. if sandman has more saves than hoffman I'll concede that one to you Yanks fans. But not a moment sooner.

What's Hoffman's lifetime ERA in the postseason?
Was Hoffman 34 for 38 in save opportunities in the playoffs?
Trevor Hoffman is one of the best ever but you at least have to say Rivera right there with him.

C'mon Scotty, I appreciate the love for Rivera but not all the Yanks are juicing. Jeter, Melky, Cano, Posada, Matsui, Damon, Abreau... none of those guys have ever been implicated. The only Yankees on the roster that juiced or have been accused of it are Giambi, Pettitte and A-Rod. Personally I don't think A-Rod ever touched the stuff he's been a power hitter his whole career and is a health fanatic. Who's to say that a bunch of guys on Boston's roster didn't juice?

I'm not going to waste a bunch of time looking these stats up. Instead consider the following:
In order to get great postseason stats, you have to play for a team that gets to the postseason often. Therefore, the quality of the team that you play for has a lot to do with your postseason stats. That makes it not really a measure of personal success and therefore diminishes the importance for the purposes of this argument.
The only stat that matters in the argument of "greatest closer ever" is total saves. Which Hoffman leads quite handily. Mo might catch up to Hoffman at some point, he is about 100 saves behind if memory serves. Assuming Hoffman retires today, Mo would still need 2 - 3 solid years closing to catch up.
All that said, I am willing to put Mo in the top 5 closers of all time. maybe even top 3. But #1 is still hoffman in my opinion. If Mo should pass hoffman in total saves i am willing to concede that he is the better closer. But not until then.

first of all, a statement that sox fans havent come in to chirp like the little birdies you guys are, isnt a bash, its a joke - grow a sense of humor.
a comment as such that mo is the only yankee not juicing, that is a bash. there are two proven yankees on the current roster who have admitted to taking steroids. giambi who sucks and i cant wait to get rid of him and hopefully get texiera, and pettite who i dont blame because of his health.
now. mariano is without a doubt the best closer of all time. there is no comparison - you wanna argue hoffman ok he has more saves. do you know that mariano wasnt a closer when he came up, he started his rookie season, and in his 2nd season he was the setup man to john wettland. hoffman was named the closer immediately because of the lack of talent in san diego.
mariano in the playoffs? oh 34 saves and a 0.77 ERA. THATS 10 ER in 117 INNINGS.
a completely absurd number. hoffman in the playoffs?
4 saves and a GRREAT!!! 3.46 ERA.
In their careers, hoffman has 67 more saves in 83 more chances and hoffman has a save percentage that is 1% better. congrads, the fact that mo pitched in the much much much better AL makes up for that 1%.
come at me when you have a real argument with hoffman and mo.
and boston good luck with paps taking over mo's role, isnt he supposed to be turned into a started?
