I want to get a few people's opinion on Delgado and whether or not you think he used steroids. He's been considered a power hitter since his first full season in 1996 with Toronto when he had 488 AB's and belted 25 homers. After that year he had 30+ homerun seasons for 10 straight years until last year when he hit 24. MLB started looking into steriods significantly in 2006 and I wonder if its a coincidence that his numbers dropped off dramatically in 2007 and everyone knows his struggles this year. Do you attribute his dropoff to age or do you think he was using performance enhancing drugs and got off them?
I personally like Delgado and if I were a betting man i would bet he didnt, but i'm curious to get other people's thoughts....
My guess is that he did not....His struggles were from pitchers pitching him inside and he couldnt hit the ball, then he would chase pitches outside the zone....
Some hitters have weaknesses and Delgado's is that inside pitch...
I think his age is not really a likely candidate. He is from Puerto Rico, and they have pretty solid records there. Its not like some of the more liberal islands/countries. PS: I went to HS with guys who were already greying at 16. Its not an exact science like that.
I don't think he juiced. Did he perhaps take some of those pills that help muscles heal faster, perhaps, but I doubt it.
I think he's a big guy, with a lot of strain on his joints and at 35/36 his bat speed has slowed down. Also, that HUGE shift against him is killer, and he isn't adjusting at all - hard to teach an old dog new tricks. And its not like he didn't hit HRs last year. He hit 24. This year he is on pace to hit about the same. Sounds like age to me.
I don't think Carlos Delgado juiced up. Yes, he seems to be showing his age (grey hair, slower bat speed), but he also seems to get some nagging injuries that affect the part of his game the Mets need most, his bat. In this early season, he seems to be coming around ... Maybe those nagging injuries are getting easier to deal with.
He's had injuries to his wrist, his knee, what else am I missing? Injuries and age have affected Delgado more than we know probably. However, he seems to be thriving in the 7th spot in the lineup and seems to have taken the more in the batting order well.
I think Absolutley he did. Look at his size. My forearms are more defined than his are now-a-days. He is certainly noticably smaller. And no one drops that much in the course of a year. He is pathetic. Like Last night. Ducks on the pond and he k's on 3 pitches. Then in the field the next inning he bobbles a grounder then throws it away.......he is just awful. I wonder if we could get some pitching for him, maybe to the AL. Right now i dont care who we get for first...bring that Self up...Anyone who WANTS to play. His attitude and play make me sick.
i am on the fence about delgado. there haven't been rumors swirling around with him implicated, but he did have the body type and the power numbers that mark him as a possibility. like many players, he got considerably bigger over the course of his first few years in the league, and went from being a catcher to a slugging DH/1B. that doesn't necessarily mean he did, but i think it's about 50/50 with him. when the decline phase comes so suddenly and so harshly for a guy, you have to at least wonder.
Delgado is a true man of honor & character, I have a hard time believing he was juicing in any way. I'm not saying impossible just that it's unlikely.
Power hitters can have steep declines in performance as they age and Delgado is no different. He simply cannot generate enough bat speed to hit the inside fastball anymore. Maybe he should step further away from the plate, I don't know but the guy is giving 100%.
I think its redilous that people are saying that delgado juiced...
one hes old
dude normally people slow down hitting at this time...
another i predicted he start stinking it 3 years ago when we got him.. that this would be the end....
another thing delgado looks the same... his bat speed does ala age
delgado is getting old bottom line his bat is slower and he is guessin more
JR aint hittin hrs either is that because he juiced? no its cause he getting OLD!!
you know whos one something
Nate McCloth he is either on something or his going to die down ... but shoot 10 hrs and its still may and this guy never hit more then 12 in the minnors and had 13 last year!!!
no way i think delgado juiced i guess Ryan Howard juiced too

Maximus, I dont care how much of a Delgado Lover you are...but hear this Carlos Delgado gives %100 like Bill Clinton never had sexual relations with that women. I watch almost every single Met game and I cannot think of ONE time this year I saw Delgado give %100. That statement you made is an absolute diss to the guys who are giving %100 like Wright, Church, Schnieder, Alou, and Reyes. Certainly not Delgado.
