It's great to see this kid gearing up and hitting. Once Prince gets going, Braun should begin to see even more pitches that are to his liking. When both these guys are hot, they can single handedly take over a game. One major problem I've seen though, is the lack of "table setting" by Weeks and Cameron. Both these guys need to focus simply on getting on base, especially when Braun is hot like this. When he cools down, then worry about your RBI,s, Home Runs, Slugging %'s, etc. In the meantime, do whatever it takes to get on ahead of one, hell, lean into one now and then .
Braun is going to be scary good at the plate for a long, long time. Yeah, the defense still isn't there, but he's "serviceable" in left for now with how he judges balls. That should get better with time, and his arm is fantastic. The Brewers need to find a way to get him signed long term ASAP.
IMO, we will only be able to keep one of the two between Fielder and Braun. I'll vote Braun till the cows come home. Hopefully, management will agree and we'll see Braun in a Brewers uniform well into the next decade.
Good points bro...Weeks needs a wake-up call. I used to think Soriano was pathetic at the top of the Cubs lineup...Weeks makes Soriano look like a good option right now.
I wonder what the hesitation is with Gwynn...he seems like a natural lead-off guy. And with the way Cameron is swinging the bat right now (despite his inflated salary), I would like to see Gwynn get a shot for a couple games. If nothing else, it would give Cameron a break, and put Weeks somewhere else in the order, where it might click for him.
I said yesterday in another post that I though Cameron and Gwynn should start platooning in center. Not necessarily with righties vs lefties, that would have Cameron on the bench too much for what we pay him, but that's my thoughts.
I noticed today Cameron seems to have lost a step in center. Now that the Padres released Edmonds, you think they'd take Cameron back? Kidding, I think the guy will be alright this year, but I do agree that TGJ needs more playing time. I love his patience and approach at the plate.
2) Weeks has more HR's than Prince. What about a REAL problem, like having a number 5 hitter with 1 HR?!?!? Pitchers have more homeruns that Hart. We can't have a singles hitter in the 5-hole ... he belongs in the 7 hole.
3) Weeks is already leading the team in BB, HBP, R, SB .... and since R's are the single most important thing, he's obviously doing his job when he gets on. I'm more disappointed, personally, in Prince. Weeks is connecting, he's just not finding the hole. And, from what I've seen this year, he has more walk-off hits than anyone else on this team.
4) You really expected Cameron to come in and be a contact hitter who gets on base a lot? He's always been a strikeout king.
And you CANNOT start both Gwynn and Hart ... if they hit like Ichiro, that would be one thing... but they don't.
You cannot, in today's baseball, start two guys in the outfield who may not combine for 8 HR's in a whole season. This isn't 1983. Gwynn doesn't have 1/100th the talent of Weeks. That's just a fact.
corey hart DID hit 24 home runs last year. Yes he should have more than one at this point, but he still does have an OK amount of extra base hits and only trails braun in slugging pct. I don't know who else you put in the 5 slot besides hart. If Cameron continues to struggle maybe you move Hart up to the two spot so someone can be on base for Braun and Fielder...but theres really no other guy who can fit in the 5 hole. Maybe if Billy Hall remembers that one time he could hit like .280 because he wasn't trying to pull everything....
Maascow: as to #2, Prince Fielder hits a large number of doubles as well. Also, if Braun is on base when Hart comes up to bat, you just need to get him home. Corey Hart's AVG and OBP are great. Better to have a chance at clearing in runners on base before bringing up your next power hitter - one that only knows how to hit power and is incapable of hitting a decent base hit. Hart's RBI will continue to climb hitting behind Fielder and seems to be the best man for the job.
Prince Fielder won't even sniff his numbers from last year. It seems he's a one year wonder. He's also a defensive liability. If the Brewers were smart, they'd trade him to an AL team as a DH and get some bullpen help in return.
I'm confused how Braun's D "isnt there" and how its only "serviceable". He has a strong, accurate throwing arm from left, he has 3 assists and hasn't committed an error through a month and a half. I would have to say that is better than "serviceable".
I agree that Prince won't put up 50 home runs like he did last year, but he still is very talented at the plate. He is seeing the ball well this year when he isn't pressing (has anyone else noticed that Fielder likes to try a little too hard immediately after Braun hits a homer?). His defense is slowly getting better, as he's starting to dig a few bad throws out. I'll re-evaluate come contract time.

I used the words I used because he hasn't learned to play the slice or the hook yet, his "jumps" are mediocre at best, and he hesitates when deciding to let a ball fall or make a play on it. Errors are a strange thing for outfielders. Point and case, how many runs came across last year because of Hall taking bad angles to the ball alone? 25? Taking a bad angle doesn't count as an error, but a gold glove outfielder doesn't make that mistake.
