With the allegations of OJ Mayo taking money from signing agents, it makes me wonder how much of this occurs at all the big name schools including UW. I won't pretend I'm naive enough to think it doesn't happen at UW. The only incident I can remember with UW was the Shoe Box scandal (if you consider it at a 'scandal' level) with the football team back in the late 90's.

I honestly can't see Bo Ryan putting up with any crap concerning this type of stuff with his basketball team. I really can't. This doesn't mean there are shady boosters playing behind-the-scenes games with our recruits.

On the other hand, could there be wrongdoings going on with our football team? We've been getting progressively better over the years since the Barry Alvarez era, and now we're getting recruits from major talent states like Florida and Texas. Sure, USC has tradition, great weather, and beautiful women...so i don't even see why they should have to pay anyone to go play there, but Madison on the other hand is cold (we do have our share of beautiful women, just more girl-next-door ones : )...and it makes me wonder how we draw some players up from the south. Bielema's a shifty, deceiving guy. Let's hope it's all legit.

I'm not accusing UW of anything and I'd love to believe we are on the straight and narrow path. I am simply curious of other peoples opinions of big conferences programs and UW. The university of Wisconsin is certainly moving up in the national athletic elite rankings. I would hate to see any major hit to our program.

GO BADGERS!!! (Just within NCAA regulations please!)

Now more to the point of your thread. Let's put it this way, if Bielema is cheating then he is doing a really poor job of it seeing as how we haven't even had a recruiting class crack teh top 20. You want to look for cheaters, look down in Champaign-Urbana, a losing program with no prospects suddenly getting top 10 classes year after year, and don;t give that "Zook is a great recruiter" bologna. So, could something be going on, sure I suppose anything is possible, do I think they are blatantly cheating like the reports we are seeing elsewhere, I doubt it, and if they are they are not very good at it.

I'll date myself a bit here but I seem to remember when I was on campus, Rashard Griffith suddenly showing up with a tricked out SUV that you could hear coming from about 3 miles away (or more appropriately feel the bass not necessarily hear the music).  I often thought that it was a really nice ride for a college student from Chicago on the level to have.  That was in the Stu Jackson years though and I'm certain that neither Bennet nor Ryan would put up with that.

It's understandable that a 16, 17 or 18 year old kid will take something for nothing.  It's the responsibility of the college coaching staff to monitor and mentor these kids when the get to school.  In Mayo's case his coach permitted Ferguson access to Mayo and allowed him to serve as an intermediary.  I don't believe that Bo or Brett would allow something like this to occure.

Cmon guys its USC.  Its Los Angeles.  The only thing in that town that matters is money and image.  Mayo committed to USC without even taking an official visit (he randomly called the head coach and told him he was going to school there out of the blue), that in itself says enough...not including moving 2300 miles away from his home town to live 8 miles away from the guy who was supposedly giving him money.  Theres no question that student athletes get preferential treatment, it happens on nearly every campus in the US.  The UW athletes live in nice apartments and most of them ride around on mopeds.  Im not saying that their getting paid under the table or anything, and in reality they probably arent being aided in any way, they are just given first pick.  This whole situation sucks because it is completely out of the University's hands.  Mayo and Bush were money hungry so they got involved with some people who werent affiliated with USC at all who made some tempting offers and sadly these guys took em, and now the University is taking the blame for it.  It would be very different if the coaches were supplying money to players because then it has something to do with the school.  But it is completely on OJ Mayo and Reggie Bush if they took money and gifts from agents.

To an extent I agree with you that the players take a lot of blame for this however there are two very different approaches when it comes to coaching and administering college athletics - there are those coaches who say "what he does away from the field has nothing to do with me." and those who actively attempt to root out a problem before it comes to a head (what we used to call in the military "intrusive leadership").  I believe that USC coaches and administrators have more of the former philosophy.  I hope that UW's current coaches take more of an active role in the student-athletes off-field lives and help to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Not only Urbana-Chamaign, but Minnesota's last recruiting class waaay to good for their previous record. Sure they have a new coach and their getting a stadium (not sure how many years), but a jump like that makes me think UM boosters may be involved behind the scenes.

Let's face some facts, every school including UW likely works behind the scenes in some way to land recruits.  However, I'm not going to blaspheme the boards without any reputable evidence showing that a school could possibly or is in some way cheating.  You can think all you want, but without proof everything is unfounded and all you're doing is creating trouble.
