With the Tribe hopeful to pull out of their hitting slump, there are a few players still dazzling us with their all-star play. Today alone Asdrubal Cabrerea dazzled us in the first game at shortstop where he started a highlight real double play and made a couple of other diving plays. He then in the second game of the twin bill turned an unassisted triple play!  Keep in mind, he has played nearly every game this year so far and still has not commited an error. Might we have our replacement for Omar Visquel?  Will this younster be headed to his first of many Gold Gloves?  No, I'm not over reacting. I have seen a mojority of the games so far this year. This young man is solid! He could finish this season with as little as one or 2 errors if any!

To top it off, he can hit! He hit his first homer of the season in game 1 today. He has a walk-off single last week. He is young and should improve his average as he matures!  He is definately a find and a keeper!

Go Tribe!

Ya he's got some prowess with the glove.  Thats never been his problem.  He was labeled as an Ozzie Smith/Omar Vizquel field-a-like early in his career and, sans a few times where he's tried to make too flashy of a play,  has done nothing to dispel those comparisons.
However, his work at the plate is awful.  Granted the whole team has been sucking but he's really been overrated offensively so far.  Even last year when he "rejuvenated" our offense, he still hit pretty poorly down the stretch.  If you look at his stats, he was batting .316 early in September to fade down to .283 at the end of the year.  While .283 is still very respectable, this year has confirmed that we should look at his early stats as an aberration, not the norm.  Any time a player gets called up, he has a good window where teams haven't built up a good book on how to get him out yet.  When he was called up, the other team wasn't expecting crap out of him and spent most of the pre-game video on V-mart, Grady, and Pronk.  Once he started hitting though, people started to study up on him and expose his offensive deficiencies which, as were finding out ala the .198 avg, are numerous and plenty.
All that being said, AC has a lot going in his favor.  He's got big balls, great poise, and is smart.  As you noted, he did have a walk off single the other week, he somehow coaxed that two out, 9th inning walk off the Angels a couple weeks ago, and the homer yesterday.  That combined with some huge hits in the playoffs and you've got the resume of a potential dangerous clutch hitter.  But, lets face it.  The dude is way overrated.  I project him to be a .250, 12 hr, 22 sb a year guy with a couple of future gold gloves waiting for him.  While that would be an impressive career, it's not one that strikes you as "Franchise Player."  Personally, as much as a I love him, I would've liked to see us package him with Sowers, Laffey or Adam Miller this summer and acquire a big bat.  If we didn't trade Cliff Lee because of the old "buy low, sell high" adage, then why didn't we sell on him then?  His stock will never be higher than it was and someone who knows how to hit right now.

Omar Visquel has been one of my all time favorite players. Remember Omar was a spotty inconsistant hitter for quite a few years until he finally matured at the plate with the Tribe. I am hoping that Cabrera followes in Omar's foot steps. Good defense can win championships and that is what we need and have. The big bats have always come through the Tribes great farm system. I think if you have a Gold Glover, you keep him. You can teach the hitting, the fielding sometimes just comes easier for some players ie. Roberto Alomar, Omar Visquel, Ozzie Smith. I like Cabrera's swing, I think seasoning will make him more consistant. He is young and will mature like Omar Visquel!

His glove is awesome no denying that.  I was impressed last year how he was clutch but the major league teams now have a book on him and are taking advantage of his weaknesses.  Unless he can improve his hitting I think he'll be no more than a slick fielding utility man with no bat.

baseball is a game of adjustments... yes last year they didnt have the answer for him... now maybe they do... now its Asdrubal's turn to make the adjustment and get better.  As I have watched him come into the role as a big leaguer i have noticed that he is a student of the game.  Along with the flashy highlights, he has fundamentals out the wazooo! He is smart and yet so young actually one of the youngest in the bigs with the potential to be an all star, its up to him whether he takes advantage of that or not.  I believe that he will evolve into a golden glove .300 hitting all star that the tribe better keep ahold of.

If you think Asdrubal is worth giving up on take this on  for consideration.

Sure, Asdrubal Cabrera has struggled at the plate, but what Indian not named Grady or Victor hasn't this year? Asdrubal has the playing heart of his fellow teammate Grady Sizemore; you can see it every time he makes an amazing play; last night's diving catch as a prime example. So the guy may never put up impressive offense numbers... or he might, who knows? It's a month and a half into a season where the entire offense is struggling. But you can't buy that kind of heart that he's showing in that field. How many games may have been different had his glove not been there? If their saving grace is starting pitching, their defense is its backbone.

Asdrubal Cabrera is the real deal. He is a breath of fresh air from Josh Barfield. His defensive skill are phenominal. Once he steps his hitting up to the portential that I know he can do, then we'll have another allstar on our hands. Hopefully the Tribe can keep on this hot streek and carry it on to the playoffs and beyond.

GO TRIBE!!!

Just a thought here....I'm an expatrioted Oriole fan.  (I came over with Eddie Murray.)

AC is a defensive beast and is exactly what we need to win.  The O's of the 70's and 80's won with starting players like Rich Dauer, Mark Belanger, and Rick Dempsey.  They couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.  But they were solid in the field.  Defense (particularly up the middle) and pitching wins.
