College is an institution of higher learning not higher ethics. People learn from their mistakes and about themselves at this important juncture in their lives. I'm not saying that what this guy did was right (at all), but he did make a mistake and hopefully learned from it. I think it is easy to forget that these players, for the most part, are still kids and are growing physcially and mentally. It is easy for us to pick apart the actions of these kids, but hey, I bet this type of things happens with lots of non-athletes (we just don't hear about it). As for college football being about winning...isn't that life? Don't we all compete with each other to have the best lives for ourselves and families? Just a little food for thought!
Yes , young people learn from mistakes like minor vandalism or shoplifting a pack of gum, but using a dead woman's credit card for a few months is not just some mistake you learn from, but rather a serious moral and ethical flaw.
Poet, I bet youre one of those liberal judges who give child molesters and rapists probation.
Obviously you didn't really read what I wrote. By no means did I expect a slap on the hand but young people make big mistakes and its a learning process for them. Just making the point that we are quick to judge. Isn't prositution a serious moral and ethical flaw? Yet buying flesh happens everyday, almost everywhere(Small town, big city, Washignton DC). As for your liberal comment...not even going to respond!
Heres another story about a college basketball player beating a student into a coma. We'll just chalk this one up to kids making mistakes. Hopefully they'll both learn from it, if the student ever regains consciousness.
Poet,
What exaclty are you saying. basically you said nothing but state the obvious. He got kicked off the team, as he should be. Now he will probably face the student advisory board that will decide his future at U of F. If they decide that after he serves his punishment he can still attend school i am all for it. Poet, remember college in not a right it is a privilege and everyone who attends must abide by certain rules. I think this one is an infraction that is well worthy of expulsion.
He didn't make a mistake. A mistake is is doing something in error. He made a conscious decision to do something that is illegal. There is no way to justify what he did. No way to rationalize it away. The magnitude of his actions warrented his being discharged from the team. Not all illegal actions should or would result in a penalty as drastic as being discharged. A shoplifting incident would be treated differently. His actions were so morally reprehensible that the penalty was called for.
I have to agree with ardvrk. This is just a disgusting act and there is really no room for this kind of behavior to be allowed. He should be kicked out of the school, and perhaps go back home to Jacksonville to get an education. How anyone can say this just a mistake? The card was used nearly 70 times, and for the most part people dont change.
