The punishment should be proportional to the crime.
You run a red light but there is no accident, a few hundred dollars and maybe a night in jail along with X hours of community service.
You run a red light, and cause an accident. The person in the other car dies, even though you didn't mean to cause the accident. At least 20 years in jail, along with X hours of community service.
But if you flat out intentionally kill someone, you deserve the death penalty. Its not revenge, its justice. Revenge would be like "oh, this guy deserves the death penalty since he robbed my store." It just amazes me how many of these families forgive these murderers and basically let them off the hook and keeping their lives.
