That would be great, but we have no money for him. Mendenhall and sweed are take most of whats left of our 2008 cap

It sounds like there are two question marks to making this happen.

Is McFarland healthy? The workout could provide an answer.

If he is healthy, is he willing to accept a contract that would work within the Steelers' salary cap? That's a tougher question to answer because the better he looks at the workout, the higher his price might go.

McFarland is exactly the kind of guy the Steelers have been successful with in free agency. Think about Kimo Van Olhoeffen, for example. He's a plugger who can take on blockers to free up the LBs to rush the passer. And he's stout against the run. He'd be a good fit, but the key is getting him to accept a relatively low-dollar salary. You don't leverage your cap to sign Booger.

Well, for one, McFarland seems like the type of guy that would be willing to take a smaller salary to go to a good team.  I'm not saying that's definitely going to happen, but if it were to even be a question in the future, there's no doubt McFarland wouldn't want to come here.

Also, pending some cuts and so forth later on this off season should provide some extra money to round McFarland up.

He seems like a great fit for the Steelers, at 6-0 300 lbs. he will really be able to clog the middle.  One of the best defenses against the run seems like it's about to get even better, if this is to happen.

A Defensive Line corps of Smith, Hampton, Keisel, McFarland, Eason, and Kirschke sounds like a deep one that is something to be reckoned with for years to come.

Steelers=sb, you echo my thoughts exactly.  A couple of players could find themselves cut to release cap room.  At the top of that list of possible cuts would have to be Sean Mahan and Najeh Davenport.  I'm not sure how much benefit the Steelers would get from cutting Mahan-- he does have a big bonus that would have to be paid against the cap this year if he is cut.  I don't know the numbers-- would it be less or more than his base salary?  I'm less certain about Tyrone Carter-- I know he disappointed some people late last season, particularly against the Jaguars, but there's not a whole lot of safety depth.  With Doug Legursky and Darnell Stapleton in fold behind Justin Hartwig, Mahan isn't needed at center-- and it seems that Chris Kemoeatu has the left guard spot sewed up.  And Mendenhall pretty much signals the end of Davenport-- at least down the road.  Besides Gary Russell and Carey Davis are cheaper and go do the same work.

Also, don't be surprised if some player isn't asked to restructure his contract to open up cap room this year.  The Steelers have done this before.  And it is still possible that Max Starks will be given a multi-year contract, which would nullify the big one-year offer he just signed and open up some cap room.  Lots of creative ways exist to sign a free agent like Anthony McFarland-- if the Steelers are satisfied that he'll be ready to go.

I think it would be great to add another quality veteran to our D-Line. I hope he isn't greedy.

if we can get him cheap and he passes his physical i dont see why not.

we could use the depth.

i was really excited when we first got davenport and now im pretty disapointed from his stay, see you in hell powers!!

mahan may or may not be cut depending on his signing bonus, i guess we'll see come june 1st/

Mahan won't be cut because of both his signing bonus and his ability to play both center and guard....They should not sign McFarland unless he agrees to a small amount of money because he really won't get a lot of playing time....Chris Hoke is still a very solid player to come in whenever Hampton needs a breather, and McFarland is too slow to be a DE.....the only time when the Steelers could really use him is on 4th and inches or goal line situations
