SI has a listing of the best players in history who wore/wears each number.

Here is the link sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0804/mlb.best.baseball.players.numbers.0-22/content.1.html

It is no surprise that Yankees dominate the players chosen in the lower numbers. So what numbers do you think that they got it wrong with?

The first choice that I totally disagree with is at #23. I never would have picked Kirk Gibson over Ryne Sandberg

I totally agree. Outside of LA and Detroit, Gibson is remembered for one thing: the homerun off Eck. Sandberg is hands-down the best secondbaseman to every play the game (shut up, Joe Morgan).

The other decision that seemed odd was to call Franciso Rodriguez the best #57 over Johan Santana. Rodriguez is a great pitcher, and a dominant closer. But does anthing need be said about Santana's resume?

I did get a chuckle out of a few of the numbers, such as Scot Shields, Scott Shoenwies, and Scott Linebrink (just realized they all have the same first name). Obviously, they had some trouble finding others that ever wore that jersey number.

#51 Ichiro over the Big Unit?  Did Ichiro wear 51 in Japan and is that being counted?  #51 will alway be Bernie Williams in my mind, but Johnson deserves the nod here.

There was a cloumn on SI.com the other day saying if you just take on-field accomplishments into account, Mo Rivera deserves #42 over Jackie.

I have also heard the argument that #10 should go to Chipper over Andre Dawson.

Well Lefty Grove would be  my choice as the greatest player ever to wear # 10

SI picked Jack Morris over Tom Glavine for #47. That is another one I would have gone the other way with

I'm a HUGE fan of Chipper, and even I know that he's not the #1 10. If not Dawson, I would give that nod to Ron Santo.

I actually think Dawson wore #8 during his MVP season with the Cubs.

Interesting list and thanks for an interesting thread:  Here's the only ones that I'd amend:

#23  Ryne Sandberg over Kirk Gibson

#29  Rod Carew should at least get honorable mention.  Satch deserves his credit though as his best years were in the Negro league.

#42  Mariano Rivera over Jackie Robinson

#51  Randy Johnson over Ichiro

#56 is a tossup between the one they picked Buerle and Brian McRae
