Geoff Jenkins, THE PLAYER THAT BRAUN IS REPLACING: 7.7 million a year (he made 10 with the Brewers last year and their highest paid player)
Braun: 5.6 million a year
Howard: 10 million a year
Ramirez: 11.7 million a year
Zito: 18 million a year
Santana: 23 million a year
Beltran: 17 million a year
Dunn: 9 million a year
These are just some random names as well as some recent young guys who were paid off by their squads, but I believe that Braun is an upper-tier player such as these (probably better than Jenkins and Dunn). The numbers are based on contracts displayed by rotoworld.com
*** Mind you that the Brewers would have been able to hold onto Braun for dirt cheap (he's making 455K this year) for several more years, and the Brewers opted to pay him off now rather than keep him at his nothing salary for that long.
GREAT DEAL FOR THE CREW!!

Braun made a horrible deal and should fire his agent.

Braun could have gotten way more one would think. He's nowhere near as good as Hanley Ramirez, so matching that contract would have been tough, but surprise him (no less, Tulo) settled for so little.
I still think the Mets were idiots for signing Beltran to that much... and SF for signing Zito to that much. The thing to remember is that signing a player like Braun (and Zito or whoever else) is that they aren't that seasoned and could take a real nose-dive in their performance if they hit a wall. Braun certainly shouldn't be getting garaunteed double digit millions at this point, but could be worth it in the long haul.
Part of me wonders if they've sat Braun, Hart, Fielder, and Hardy down to explain some basic finances and show them what potential the team would have if they didn't individually try to bend the Brewers front office over with threats of running of th NYC or Boston. If I'm a young player, getting a long-term deal locked up seems appealling if I know I'll be surrounded with a solid team of players who are also committed to a long-term goal of a World Series.

I would appreciate if anyone would post the contracts of players that they think are at least comparable to Braun's skill level.
I thought of one, Alfonso Soriano... Who gets a meagar 17 million a year. You can argue who is better but I'm pretty confident that they're at least Equal in value to their teams.

Great Thread Scotus! I had the same feeling when I saw this! I thought it was a steal for the Crew in the instance that it's a 7 year deal, and by then end of it Braun should be a premier OF in the majors. I mean he should be an MVP candidate year in and year out as we're only paying him a fraction of what these other superstars are making!
Great deal Brewers! Glad to have Ryan locked up!! :)

Juan Pierre makes 8 million a season, If a scrub like that can pull down 8 million. Then Braun undervalued himself. I'm surprised that the Players Union isn't upset by this one.

The only contract on this list that is truely similar to Ryan Braun is Hanleys. The other players were already past their rookie contracts when they signed these deals. Braun may be taking a pay cut on the salary but he will be making around 5m extra in the next 2 seasons that he wouldnt have made just re-signing for 670k. He now knows that he will be able to take care of everything for the next few years and if he lives up to what the Brewers think hes worth then i see them renegotiating the contract.

This isn't perfect, but mlb.com has comparison's to this point in the season. And Braun is in the same category as Chipper Jones and David Wright.
Jones - Just restructured deal from 17 mil to 11 mil so he's guarenteed 11 mil this season and next season
Wright - making 5.25 million this season and it goes up from there for the next 4 or 5 seasons!
So Braun is clearly a better deal than both those players. And I'd be more than happy that Braun is always mentioned in the same breath with those players as far as performance goes!! :)
