It is kinds funny but we did have him last year before spring training. We traded him to the Reds for cash after we picked him up from the Rays. It would be nice to see him in the outfield right now.

Only way the Cubs get Josh Hamilton is if Jim Hendry gets in a time machine and rejects the trade to the Reds cause he isnt leaving the Rangers.

I said this last year, getting rid of him was a bad move by big Jim. Look where we'd be if he was still a Cub, considering he was putting up the same numbers. He'd be hitting 5 and we wouldn't be worring about Jim Edmonds.

There is always this misconeption that the Cubs "Had" Josh Hamilton. They never had him. They sold the pick to the Reds is what happened. They agreed to sell it to the reds when the Cubs decided they did not want to draft anybody in that position. The Reds Approached them and gave them I think 150K to draft a player for them(you cannot techniqually trade a pick, but you can sell the player). They were given a sealed envelope immediately before the draft, which they gave to the commish when their turn came. THe cubs were just as shocked as anyone when the name inside was Josh Hamilton, but I don't think they disappointed.
The reality is that the Cubs apparently thought like a lot of teams that his past history of drug abuse and walking out on his team was too much of a risk. Remember that Sweet Lou was the manager when he walked out. I suspect sweet Lou gave his 2 cents when they asked should we take a flyer on this guy. Once they decided there wasn't anyone worth taking(including hamilton), then why not sell it. This is exactly the same thing that happened this year with Lahey.
I bet the Cubs wish they would have taken a flyer on him, but the reality is that they never really "had" him. Hind sight is always 20/20, but it is wierd that the Reds would be desperate enough to give him a flyer, and the cubs felt they were already set in the OF. Hamiton, Dome and soriano would look pretty good. Especially with a 4th OF of Reed Johnson.

you brought up some excellent point bnile, most people misunderstand exactly what happened in the deal. we also attempted to trade for Josh Hamilton prior to the Reds dealing him to the Rangers. the Cubs offered Sean Marshall and another unamed player for hamilton. the reds quickly said that they preferred not to trade within their division. oh well hind sight is definately 20/20 but their is also no sense in crying over spilt milk. we have a solid outfield combination of Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, Reed Johnson, and jim edmonds. josh hamilton would have been nice but if we want to go down that road you could easily say why did we draft Mark Prior over Joe Mauer? the two were considered a toss up in the draft and pitchers are always a greater risk. but there is really no sense worrying about any of it now.

Josh Hamilton is a stud, and the Rangers just gave up Volquez for him so he's not going anywhere. It would take way too much but I have him on both my fantasy squads so I hope he remains a stud.
