Check out the NL Central standings:
Cubs - 25 W, 16 L, .610........ 17-7 home, 8-9 road, 4-4 E, 14-10 C, 7-2 W
Astros - 24 W, 18 L, .571...... 11-6 home, 13-12 road, 5-4 E, 8-6 C, 11-8 W
IMO, the Cubs should consider themselves very lucky.
They've gone 8-9 on the road... the 'Stros are 13-12.
Their home record is only more impressive than the Astros' home record because they've PLAYED SO MANY GAMES AT HOME.
The only thing I'll give the Cubs props for right now is their 7-2 record against the West. That IS truly dominant. We didn't have much success against the Padres, because they hadn't gone into the tank yet in those first four games of the season (we swept 'em in a 2 game series here in Houston, outscoring them MASSIVELY... and we handled the Dodgers and Giants... but San Diego was cruel, and Arizona was CRUELEST to us). HOWEVER... as good as the Cubs have been vs. the West, they've played 9 games to our 19.... vs. the West. So we'll see how it all pans out. But we've basically been almost FINISHING the season schedule vs. the West while the Cubs beat up on the Central's basement.
Let's take care of the Rangers (technically an AL West team!) this weekend, in the good ol' Central Time Zone..... and then head home to take on those aforementioned Cubs. NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL... up for grabs, baby!

The 'Stros have played 8 more road games than home games. It'll be nice to be able to come home for a week series, as the Astros always fair pretty well against the Cubs in Houston. Sampson has GOT to pitch. He for some reason has the Cubs number. We just need to keep pace this weekend by taking a few from the Rangers.
Let's go 'Stros!

We must be in the top 3 "teams with more road games so far than home games" in the NL, if not both leagues, right now... meaning we should have lost more than we've won... and we haven't. 24-18, baby.
It will be awesome to see what we've got for the Cubs, but the team's got to focus on playing some AL-style ball (which this year apparently means pitchers' duels with low scoring!) vs. the Rangers, so let's hope they're not getting ahead of themselves like I am! Heh...
Sampson should be pitching against the Cubs unless Thursday's outing has Coop worried or something... but I think Sampson earned some patience with his performance against the Dodgers last weekend. A 5-0 win speaks volumes. Didn't he go 7 innings in that game, too?

Shoot I would like to play Dbacks and Padres again right now. They were lucky that we weren't hitting well at the beginning of the season. Right now, we're hitting the balls well. Those games we lost could have turned in a win if we were to manage to score 5 runs or more which is what we have been doing recently. The Cubs were lucky to catch them when they went cold and the pitching cooled down. Shoot I say if we play those clubs again we could sweep them as well.

The Cubs are same as usual, April and May glory, come September it will be wait till next year again. They'll find out next week what it's like to play a real team with some lumber in the lineup instead of the toothpick batters of the Pads and beating up on the celler dweller garbage like the Reds and Bucs. I can't wait to see the Pinella's coronary after Pence, Berkman, Lee and Tejada go back to back to back to back on that overrated staff. Can't wait.

The Astros may have some more late-inning success against the Rangers. Their bullpen is AWFUL. I wouldn't be surprised to see some more late-game rallies. But the Astros and Rangers always seem to have one game that is a slugfest for one or both teams every season. Wonder when that one will be.

Where do you come up with that? Until this year, those have been two of their worst months because most of their sluggers don't start hitting until the weather warms up (Sosa, D Lee, Soriano, etc)

gfoxcook, in response to your complaint about the Astros having had to play more games against the west than the Cubs. Who are you kidding? The west is weak this year, and the only legit team in that division (the Dimondbacks) the Cubs swept. As for the coplaint about all the home games we have played, well, all you can do is play the scedule you were given.
This should be a good series and probably fairly telling for the Astros as far as how good they are.
My question for you guys is can Berkman and Tejada keep up this crazy hitting display all year?

2 runs against the Cubs overrated staff. Tejada, Berkman and Lee did go back to back to back in the 8th. Back to the dugout!

But we've basically been almost FINISHING the season schedule vs. the West while the Cubs beat up on the Central's basement.
Give the NL central some credit, gfoxcook. The bottom of the division is not nearly as feeble as the bottom of the NL West. The bottom 3 in the West have a .372 winning pctg. The bottom 3 in the Central have a .424 winning pctg. So, except for the Diamondbacks, the Astros were playing some pretty poor competition as they "finished the season schedule against the West"
And, conventional wisdom is you try to play .500 ball on the road and make hay at home, and that is what the Cubs have done.
You guys have a good offensive team. But, your league 11th pitching staff will have to improve before you can rightfully say you have a real chance. Nice try , though.

Our 11th pitching staff and good offense did pretty well, I'd say.

We did play the Padres once we started hitting. We had a 9-run game against them and a 10-run game against them, IIRC. It was in a 3-game stretch where we scored 30 runs in those 3 games, regardless.
But yes, if we hadn't won 1 out of 4 to start the season at San Diego... because we played them a month or two later and won 3 of 4 instead, say... that sure would have been great, to pick up those games and not drop them.

The very first one, it turned out! 16-8... heh.. figured, eh?

You may not have been paying attention, seeing as how your Cubs didn't have to play the West the first couple of weeks of April, but the West wasn't quite so weak at the very start of the season. The Giants sucked, yes. But the other four teams were doing decently or great those first two weeks.
That's why I was using the Astros' many many games out West early in the season, in addition to the whole "Cubs have played as many games at home as the Astros have on the road" to suggest that even though the Astros haven't managed to pass the Cubs in the standings as of mid-May 2008, the Astros are actually doing VERY well considering the schedules so far in the Central.

Again. Now it seems that way. A month ago, it didn't.
