In my mind, it's not about whether they would be successful, its about High schoolers having a clue about real life.
It's protecting them from being injured the first year they are in the NBA, then having no NBA career and then what? They spend all their money and are homeless!
Ok that is an extreme case, personally I think they actually have to get a degree (and yes REALLY get one, not have one purchased for them or let them take basketweaving and pass with a D!) so no one who isn't a Senior should be able to play ANY major sports without a degree. That way they actually have something to fall back on when the 90% of people who try to make a pro sports team don't make it. Or have enough intelligence(such as it is as a student-athlete) to invest their money so they aren't on the street at an early age.
And in real life, College basketball players get injured, lose theirscholarships and drop out after they can't afford classes. So what if they make a load of money? A lot of these players aren't like average middle-class or richer people.A lot of them came from poverty, to them life is all or nothing and getting money is important now, because if they get hurt in college, they made nothing after they lose their scholarship.
First off, they don't lose their scholarship if they get hurt, they continue to get a free education, that is fact. Also, in most cases, players cannot have their scholarships taken from them for any reason short of breaking laws or flunking out. So, what is you next reason?
They don't lose thier scholarship's if they get injured? Oh really? How about if they just aren't performing? There have been players that have been released from scholarship for many reason...
Most university's honor the injured players scholarship, but not all. College is just as cutthroat as the pros.
Ask Walter Mendenhall from Illinois about that one.
I believe totally with what you said but most of those NBA ready players are 1 and done anyways and also it not fair to make them get a degree because your forgetting how much hrs they put into basketball in order to be an NBA player you have to do even more work and to get a degree would take them more then 4 years.
I don't know what people are hearing, but I went to college on a athletic scholarship and when I signed it specifically said that my scholarship could not be revoked due to injury or poor performance. However, scholarships can be taken away for repeatedly violating team rules or not making the grades. There are alot of things that go on behind closed doors that the public doesn't know, so if a player loses his/her scholarship, you can bet that they did something to deserve that.
thats a joke right? They get drafted in the first round and sign a GAURENTEED contract. who cares if they get hurt at that point. However since they HAVE to go to college and they get hurt, not drafted then they are poor and homeless
What a terrible take! Land of opportunity, hmmmm lets make a road block for people to succeed just cuz you have a problem with it. Yeah cuz you need a degree to play pro ball. The only reason anyone goes to college is for an advance in career to make more money. Anyone tells you different they are full of crap. "Just want to further my education for 20,000 a year" ok and if it gets you no more money in the workplace hey thats ok. YEAH RIGHT. Yeah, i wouldn't want to get hurt after being drafted in the 1st round and get a GAURENTEED contract, i would rather be forced to go to college for a year get hurt then not get drafted and be ruined
I understand the argument, but seriously, how often does a player get hurt in basketball to the point that it is career threatening? Not very, so that shouldn't even be an issue. Plus have you ever heard of the insurance policies players on taking out on their careers now, some of them still insure that a player is going to be a millionaire even if they get injured.
