I've read some good things about this guy but I have to wait to see him in a real game (exhibition counts) to form my opinion. I think there were good reports about Cedric Benson when we first drafted him but he didn't show much in preseason and when the regular season came around he didn't show much either.
Yeah, I too read some VINTAGE sarticles about how Benson looked his rookie year in some camp workouts.... To defend them a little, Benson did show some promise his rookie year, he hit the holes harder and was a little faster then he was last season but overall, yeah, Benson was over hyped a bit ....
I will say that I think it is easier to judge a WR then a RB in shorts !!!! You can tell by watching the WR run his routes, his break on the ball in flite, how he secures the ball, how he makes defensive reads and then adjusts his route accordingly etc.... For a RB, well, it's hard to judge how the guy will run between the tackles when they are only in shorts and no pads....
I think Monk could be a bright spot this year for us. He has all the tools needed to be a successful WR at the NFL level, he has great hands, above average size and he is natural at using his body to shield defenders and gain position.
The key for him now is to keep learning the play book and STAY healthy. If he can grasp the offense and keep showing improvement when the real practices and pre-season games start up then I see no reason NOT to think that Monk couldn't win a job as a 4'th or 5'th wideout this year.... Who knows, if he shines he could wind up at #2 opposite Booker although I think our WR core this year will be much more of a platoon type system that allows all the active WR's opportunities to play rather then just having a true #1 and a #2 taking mnost of the reps.
