If it goes unbeaten?
Looking back, Here are the ones I can remember;
Tulane in 1998, Utah in 2004, Boise St in 2006, and Hawaii in 2007. Of these, Utah had the best OOC opponents with Texas A&M, North Carolina, and Arizona St. They also won all of their games by at least 14 points. In my mind, they certainly didnt schedule their way into a BCS game.
The revised BCS schedule allows for easier access for Non-BCS schools, but the BCS formula remains essentially the same, wins/losses, strength of schedule, computers, opinion polls. So, really, you still have to beat everyone on the field and convince people that you are a Top team. Utah failed to convince enough people. Then they went out and won their BCS game by 28 points.
Now for the best test case yet, (and no I'm not predicting this, just speculating in order to make a point),
East Carolina-If ECU went unbeaten in its conference, considering the fact that it has a conference champ game-most would consider that as good or better than Utah winning its conference in 2004.
Here's where it gets interesting. In nonconference, in order to finish unbeaten, ECU would have to beat West Virginia, Va Tech, and NC State and Virginia on the road. That would most certainly be MUCH better than what Utah did, WVU and VT are Top 20 teams and both won their BCS conferences last year.
So, I ask again...Can a non-BCS school make the NC game if it goes unbeaten?
