Who is your five starting pitcher for the Braves if you was the pitching coach? As I notice that the Braves pitching staff is some what not a go to starting 5.
1. Hudson
2. Glavine
3. Hampton when healthy?
4. ?????? No go to guy (Bennett)
5. JoJo, Buddy and Chuck who got sent down?????
I was reading something where the Braves have the worst road record and 1 run game. No wonder when I was think about it, the starting rotation is not always the same. John is hurt and when he comes back he would be a closer. Ok that helps the Pen. How will the starters pitch all the way to him to closed the game. I guess the offense is up to par to keep the team in the game. How long it will last? This week is against division teams and the following week not next week. The team will have to be strong all around in order to be in the division lead. In order to be a contender for oct this 2-3 will be the team tester. The starters will have to pitch well this week when hosting the Mets at home. Chipper and company will have to step it a notch to be the Mets. In the first week of June host the Fish and the Phil's at home and this will have to show that the braves stand alone in first place I hope....
Go Bravo

1. Tim Hudson
2. Jair Jurrjens - how could you leave him out?
3. Tom Glavine
4. John Smoltz
That's it. 4 man rotations can work, and they're no more stress on the arm than a 5 man rotation. It allows for a deeper bullpen or bench, and it also gives you more innings out of Tim Hudson and Jair Jurrjens.
If anything, put Hudson on a 3-days rest schedule while the others rotate at 4 days rest. Rotations should be much more flexible and creative than they really are.

I see some problems with the past two posts.
First of all, you can't, just can't, put Hampton in the rotation. He's hurt, always hurt, and can't compete at this stage.
Second, You can't put Smoltz in the rotation either. His days as starter are gone.
He can pitch this year as the closer or come in long relief for 3 - 4 innings. Smoltz' arm, back are out of whack.
He may just pitch as a closer next year too.
As far as a starter goes....he's done.
Further, the five man rotation is meant for April baseball.
Hardly a team goes with five starters once we get to mid-May.
This week will be the last exception, though, with a doubleheader tomorrow against the hated New York team, and 7 games in seven days (because of Tuesday's twin bill.)
The Braves play the Mets for four games this week, and Arizona for 3 over the weekend.
I hope the bats can open up.
Go Braves 08!!

I agree with the assessment on Smoltz not starting, also if you want to put Hudson into the bullpen like Smoltz, or 2+ years on DL like Hampton, go ahead and pitch him all season with three days rest. Glavine is at an age where he needs his rest between starts, too.
Bobby Cox is going to have to try and get more innings per start out of the starters to get the added innings, not pitch them on less rest so they start more games.
Tim Hudson
Jair Jurggens-- that's alot of pressure on a young arm to go all season as #2
Tom Glavine
Jo Jo Reyes, Jeff Bennett, and others unless a trade is made or someone steps up big time and shows that they belong. (Jorge Campillo will the opportunity on Tuesday against the Mets.)

5- Buddy Carlyle
I would much rather go with a four man rotation, but i dont like that idea with the pitchers we have. Lets not rush anything on Reyes and Jurrjens. I honestly would like the ideal of sending Chuck James, Corkey Miller, and (i cant remember his name) 1B Thorton for Greg Maddux. Just someone really. It would secure the #5 spot. We dont need to go out and trade the house for a top tier pitcher. Jurrjens will be great. Hudson is no slutch. Reyes will be a solid #3. So we really dont need much

The bull pen is doing well enough and will do better with Smoltz in the pen. I think Atlanta will go to a four man rotation and that a new way of thinking about pitching emerge in Atlanta. We have the pitching staff to keep teams off balance. We theoretically only need a starter to go four or five if we put another arm in the pen. Heck you could go with about anyone as a number four if you put Glavine in the pen as your mid reliever. Might be time to think about ways to pitch through these one run games.
Starters:
Hudson
Jurrjens
Reyes
Carlyle or Bennett
Pen:
Glavine
Smoltz
Campillo
Acosta
Boyer
etc...

A five man rotation keeps in mind that a 162 game schedule is a marathon, not a sprint. Glavine has not gone deep into games on regular rest, short rest would fry him. Jurjeins is young and showing promise, he needs to be nurtured slowly if he is to be relied on come October. After 1) Hudson, 2) Jurjeins, and 3) Glavine, we have to hope that 2 guys step up. Right now the most likely candidates are Reyes and Campillo, mostly because they have been given the jobs. They have earned the chance. If the top 3 starters can eat enough innings so that the bullpen is fresh when our #4 and#5 starters are out there, this would allow Bobby a quicker hook, and keep the shaky confidence of our young starters in tact. As for Hampton? Love to see it. Ain't gonna happen. I hate saying it. I saw him pitch in the spring and he looked great, but brittle is brittle. I would love him to prove me wrong, but I don't think he will.
A trade? Nearly everyone is looking for starting pitching, so to get it, we would have to overypay and give to much up to get it. Our only chance for now is to nurture our young kids, get a healthy Gonzalez, Soriano, and Smoltz into the pen to get it deeper, and hope chemistry kicks in. If a starter becomes available, it will be a rent-a-starter who would be a free agent at the end of the year for a team that has dropped out of the race. Of course with the wild card, more teams are in the race at the trade deadline, making fewer of these type players available.
I believe Chuck James me be back in the majors at some point, but he was called back up as a sort of desperation move. Two minor leage starts is not enough to prove his improved mechanics have become a habbit. He needs lots of reps working on the same thing. We can't get desperate yet.
With as many missing arms as we have had, we are still at .500. When the missing get healthy, let the domino effect begin....
Go BRAVOS!!!!
