ajc.com reports that Smoltz felt some more shoulder soreness after pitching yesterday.  Smoltz went on to comment that while he could still return late this month; He may also be out a bit longer than expected.  And he will most definitely be going to the 'pen.  That.. to me.. spells disaster for the rotation.  Yeah i know the numbers, we're high on the list in starting pitching and while I have confidence in Hudson and Jurrjens, I'm not so sure about the back three.  Glavine will probably hold down a #3 spot well but I'd feel a whole lot more comfortable if Frank Wren would make a trade for a 2 or 3 spot rotation guy.  I know plenty of you hold high regards for Jo Jo and he has looked pretty good thus far;  I'm still uneasy about that guy.

One good thing, once Gonzalez and Soriano gets back it should help take some pressure off the bullpen and also put more confidence in the starters so they dont think they have to go 7-8 innings a game.

Hopefully Smoltz will be back soon though and won't have to be out any longer than he has to be.

Confirming story. Just heard it on SportsCenter. I agree that I think the Braves need to trade for a back end rotation starter. Nothing major, but someone who will be around for a couple of years. I like Hudson, Jurrjens, and Glavine. But Reyes and Bennett or Hampton as of now could be a problem late in the season if they get burned out and are exhausted in September. I until Soriano and Gonzlaez return, Bennett needs to stay in the bullpen, he's to valuable (see yesterday's game). I still think Smoltz should be a starter, but if he knows that he can't do it, I respect that.

this is true but lets not forget that this is jurrjens first full year and he may also get worn down at the end of the year. We shouldn't really expect him to keep this up all year even though everyone holds high regards for him

I think our bullpen has been doing a decent job without the big 4. (John Smoltz, Rafael Soriano, Mike Gonzalez, Peter Moylan) They are on a tear with 16 straight scorless innings. I do think that ya'll are making good points with Jo-Jo Reyes and Jair Jurrjens. They will get worn down and probably have a higher era after the all-star break. You never know about Chuck James, he could come back up and pitch awesome, our give up 7 runs in 4 innings. I also think that Charlie Morton could come up and be lights out if he's called to the starting rotation.

Trade? First for who and 2nd what are you going to give up? Scary times ahead in the ATL. I would see if you first could sign Tex. If not trade him for young talent. Next you need a closer if Smotlz comes back to start. Waiting on the hurt to help will keep you in 4th place all year long.

Dj-- let us make something clear,

John Smoltz IS NOT  RETURNING TO START. HE WILL GOTO THE BULLPEN.  That has been confirmed.

Come trade deadline there are always two types of players-- buyers and sellers.  Last year we were buyers, thus Mark Teixeira happened.  Some team will be out and will be looking to move a player and Pitchers are going to be a hot commodity this trade deadline.  We have Chuck James, Bryan Pena, Scott Thorman, Martin Prado and Brent Lillibridge to trade off; along with the abundant source of outfielders.  We have the pieces to make a trade highly attractive for a team that is looking to rebuild.

Trading Mark Teixeira won't happen.  Why would you trade for him when he's going to walk in the off season anyway?  that'd be stupid.  Tex will finish the year in '08 and after that who knows where he goes form there.

Someone who just need's alittle power will trade for him!! Next You really think Chuck James and those other guys are worth anything? Lillibrge is a glove not a bat guy. He ain't no Hanley Ramirez!! Chuck james is 24-17 with a about 4 ERA. Who wants that?

The Braves don't have any chips to trade. So If they want to get something you have to give up something!!
