Aren’t these guys too rich to care about being yelled at?

Maybe it’s more of a way for skippers to portray a certain image in the media – that of the “winning-is-everything”, no-nonsense hard-ass. They could also be trying to protect their job, by showing owners and fans that the team’s reason for losing is definitely not reflective of a lack of enthusiasm at the coaching position.

As a White Sox fan, I’ve seen my share of outbursts, and for the record, I think Ozzie is hilarious. I also think he’s a good coach, but it seems like his tirades have mixed results. Sometimes the team wins five, sometimes they lose a few, sometimes they play .500 ball. It really doesn’t seem to matter what he says... the team will hit and pitch, and win and lose.

Thoughts?

In the case of the 2008 White Sox, so far, it helps.  The Sox have won 7 of 8 since Ozzie's meltdown, and is starting to generate some (better) offense.  But for the most part, Ozzie says what he feels be it right, wrong, or indifferent.  We have seen his outbursts in 2007, however, it didn't translate into a winning season.  His outbursts in 2008 signals that he doesn't want this team to go through another season like 2007.

I think it also depends on what type of players you have on your team and how they react.  Some players like the more laid back coaches while others prefer the in your face coaches.  I think coaches needs to show emotion to their team, but I don't think completely flipping out on a team helps too much.  I guess what Ozzie does for the White Sox helps and the players react well to him.

During the Braves 14 year division title span, whenever the team was struggling and Bobby Cox came out and argued with an empire (no matter how questionable the call), it seemed to light a fire under the team. Suddenly, they would start a hot streak and it would last them practically through the rest of the summer.

Lou Piniella's outburst in June last season got the fire lit under the Cubs also. They played outstanding ball going into the postseason.

you mean into...but not including the postseason

Lou said he actually got a better understanding of the team when he had time to watch them play outside of the dugout while on suspension. So in a way, his "tirade" helped him too

I think that over a regular season tirades get mixed results. If I were a player yelling at me isn't going get any fire burning other than the urge to smack the manager.

Where I think they're extremely helpful is when a manager's tirades are focused on the umpires as long as the manager doesn't go overboard, i.e. the minor league manager who was crawling lobbing pretend grenades, picking up bases & throwing them.

One of the better managers at this is Bobby Cox. He'll get going on an ump, get tossed for protecting his players & his players seem to respond to that.

But the best of the best, in my humble opinion was/is Billy Martin, Lou Piniella
