If the Bulls are going to bring Rose along slowly like Paxson says, and of course he could just be yapping nonsense, then they will have to keep a point guard that could actually start ahead of Rose. Hinrich is the only player currently on the Bulls that fits that description unless I'm missing someone? Not sure who the other mentoring point the Bulls have either, Duhon? He can't even beat out Hinrich for a starting job. If Paxson is to be taken at his word the Bulls will keep Hinrich as the starting point moving him to the two for extended periods when Rose will play point. It sounds like they're going to make Rose earn his minutes much like Tyrus Thomas and all the rest of the young players. I like it.

Orrockchi -
You are assuming that the Bulls will not get via trade, a cheaper veteran G not named Kirk Hinrich. With a new coach, keeping Hinrich is not a necessity. All these players will be learning a new system. If Pax wants to ease the kid into it, it does not have to be Hinrich. Now, it could be. But, when you look at the $24M in salry that Hinrich and Larry Hughes tie up, trading one of them, or Ben Gordon, makes too much fiscal sense. There is probably no market for Hughes. There will be a market for either Hinrich or Gordon. What the Bulls will look for in return is some veteran help for the 4/5 position.
Then, there is the real possiblity that Rose can outplay Paxson's expectations. If that occurs, paying Hinrich $10M next season to back the kid up is a waste.

One of the problems of moving Hinrich is that there would be no back up PG for Rose. Yes they could resign Duhon but I would rather take my chances on a FA back up. I'm guessing Pax will go with the move that Nets the players he needs. Mags is a good pick up from the Clips and he could take pressure off of Rose from doing too much. But the Denver trade looks too good and I would love Camby rulling the front court. I don't buy into the he is too old stuff as his numbers have been getting better.
Fantasy Analysis So much for wearing down with age. It actually appears the reverse is happening with Camby, who has appeared in 70 or more games each of the last two seasons. He's been labeled as injury prone in the past and does tend to sit out a game on short notice at times during the year due to the overall aggressive nature of his play and his position mixed in with his age. But you can't deny the numbers he's put up over the last eight years have made him a pretty steady center. Fantasy owners should once again look to him as a No. 1 Fantasy center in 2008-09, but look to draft another center you wouldn't mind having active for 10-20 games ... just in case.
(Updated 05/13/2008).
Camby still an elite Fantasy center: Nuggets C Marcus Camby averaged a career-high 13.1 rebounds during the 2007-08 regular season, which was the second-highest total in the league. He finished behind only Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. He also finished first in blocks per game at 3.6 and appeared in 79 games -- his highest ever total.
(Updated 05/13/2008).
Sorry Marcus is that type of player I would want for Hinrich.

Jazzman61, I'm assuming any team taking Hinrich isn't going to have a decent point guard to give up in exchange or at least not one of Hinrich's caliber. Sure a point could come in a different trade or somehow the Bulls could pull off that Odom and Fisher for Hinrich and anyone else not named Rose, Deng or Noah, but I don't really see that happening since I'm the only one who's ever proposed it. The Bobcats seem to have an extra point now, but Felton is more competition then mentor. Anyway, I'm also assuming Paxson actually means to bring Rose along slowly, and that could all be just talk.
I agree the market for Hughes is probably limited which makes me think Gordon is going to be traded as soon as a contract deal can be reached. They may even be willing to trade Deng.

If Hinrich is traded, I think the wrong thing to expect is a PG in return. However, there are other assets to trade to get a nice vet Guard. Gooden for instance, has an expiring contract. A team looking to clear cap spacewill give up talent for that purpose. Sign and trades with Gordon and Deng are possible. Nocioni and Tyrus Thomas is possible.
My point is simply, even in light of Paxson's desire to ease Rose in, limiting his tutor to being Kirk Hinrich is not taking into the realities of the Bulls current imbalance in salaries and how thin they are upfront. At the 4/5 positions, we have Gooden, Noah, Thomas, Simmons, and Gray. Nocioni is capable but, isn't he mainly the only 3 under contract currently?
1 or 2 of those guards need to become help in the frontcourt. Sefalosha and Rose are not an issue. It is the big money that will potentially tied up in Gordon, Hughes, and Hinrich that is the problem - especially when you realize that none of that 3 may be starters for you. Considering a new coach and a new system, doesn't the possibility exist that the best pairing of talent in your backcourt would be the Rose and Sefalosha? Assuming Gordon is the 6th man for his explosive scoring, that regulates $24M in salary to the edge of your rotation in Hinrich and Hughes.
At some point, in the NBA, you have to stop looking at players and start looking at contracts and what that contract provides in terms of overall usefulness. 15 player on the roster, 12 active, and maybe 9 - 10 relied on to actually play. Shouldn't your payroll be tilted towards the top of your rotation as opposed to the back of it?

I don't know who started this "mentor" idea, but please stop it. There are no mentors in the NBA. Derrick Rose does not need some wily vet teaching him how to slip screens on defense or how to split defenders on the pick and roll on offense. Mentoring just doesn't happen in professional sports. There are starters and players vying to be starters. Coaches should be the one's doing the teaching. The only thing an extra PG is going to do is take minutes from Rose. If we can luckily unload Kirk, I wouldn't be all that mad if we just resigned Du or someone like him (preferably someone average who doesn't have any disciplinary problems). Mentoring is for the business world, not professional sports.
