ATLANTA -- Slumping Atlanta Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur has been sent to the minors to work on his hitting.
Braves spokesman Brad Hainje said Friday that Francoeur was optioned to Double-A Mississippi.
Francoeur heard boos as he went 0-for-4 Thursday night to drop his batting average to .234 with eight homers and 41 RBI. He hit only .206 in June and is 1-for-12 in three games this month.
Braves manager Bobby Cox had moved Francoeur, who was expected to join Chipper Jones, Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann in the middle of the lineup, down to seventh in the batting order. He hit .293 with 19 homers and drove in 105 runs last season.
To me, you just have to wonder if the contract issues are in his head. Kinda like watching AJones from last year all over again. I know he has one but I feel he wants a big one signed and at the beginning of the year, he said it wouldnt bother him that the two sides didnt agree on a deal. I think he is trying too hard to be a star. Hopefully going to AA will get his swing fixed and his attitude will be hungry when he comes back.
The only thing I'll add is that according to the AJC he'll be working with his former hitting coach who is now the manager in AA. I wondered why he was going down to AA and now it makes a little more sense.
I wonder if Terry Pendleton is to share some of the pressure for Jeff Francoeur's struggles? Maybe the problem the Brave's are facing is simple. To much pressure... working to hard... and they just need to relax and do their thing.
