Well let's talk arbitrary numbers.
64 teams, that is arbitrary... it's also the way it is.
Arbitrary happens all the time... don't get all weepy about it. :)
This is an opinion, I don't think any team in any league in any sport should get into any playoff system without doing better than .500 in regular season play. Now, that is my opinion. Does it matter that the last team in the Big East is probably better than than the best team in some other league? Not really, not to me at least. it is a reason to be proud, but if you can't be in the top of your league then you shouldn't get rewarded. That doesn't seem arbitrary to me at all. That's why they play the league schedule instead of just pronouncing themselves champions during the preseason.
My larger point is this. The big east has a tournament, they chose to arbitrarily limit their tournament to less than the entire conference. I see no reason why the NCAAs shouldn't cap league entries by requiring < .500 league average.
After it's all said and done, I said it before, and I'll say it again. I like Villanova, I live in DC and I have fond memories of watching GTown and Villanova play each other growing up.
I always rooted for Villanova, still do. But I think they should have done better this season, and if they get in this year i would not be surprised. but personally, I'd rather see a team with a really good conference record go to the big dance.
No matter their SoS or RPI. Just my arbitrary opinion though.
