When you can't get your more talented team to win games against poor teams with the Tourney at stake, you are done. DONE!!!!!. I would have accepted 1 loss in the last 3, but all 3! And 2 games with huge leads given up? It is so unacceptable it isn't even funny. Seriously, isn't this the definition of the hot seat?

My gut tells me that Juan may be right. But first, I was hoping someone would post the terms of Gary's current contract. I'm pretty sure the salary is somewhere around $2 million a year, but I have no idea about the length, clauses, etc.
Debbie Yow is an intelligent businesswoman and a no-nonsense AD. She knows the Maryland alumni base is getting impatient. Gary has a lot going against him right now. NIT appearances in three out of the last four seasons would be tolerable/acceptable prior to a national title, but not after. If we're talented enough to build big lead after big lead against our ACC foes, reason dictates that we should be talented enough to hold them. And yes, the Carolina win was big, the highlight of the season; but everyone should remember that we almost pissed away a fairly sizeable lead in that one as well.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Gary is shown the door at the end of the season. Nothing in today's business of sports surprises me anymore.

Please read the Mike Wise column from yesterday's Washington Post. It's not Gary that needs to go, it's fairweather fans like you who need to go!
Go Terps!

justin, I'd expect more from you. Calling someone a fairweather fan is such a huge cop out and requires absolutely no thought or rationale. You're welcome to disagree, but once again you've responded to an argument with a personal attack...lame. I am completely confident and secure in my committment to my alma mater and its athletic teams.
If you had read this post more closely (or other recent posts of mine on this topic), you would realize that I haven't decided whether or not it would be better if Gary stays or goes. I've been playing devil's advocate on both sides for the sake of discussion. I read the article by Mike Wise in the Post, as you suggested, and I agree with most everything he offered regarding Gary's accomplishments. But the fact is, as I have stated before, college hoops is big business and stuck in the "what have you done for me lately" mindset. Thus, the rationale for my response to Juan's post.
I'm as upset about the recent string of losses as anyone, but I don't expect to lash out at other Terps fans on these threads as a result. I'll leave that to the Hokies fans and ACC fan.

Mac0330, you can't be surprised by justinterps response to your post. I have not been on CBS very long, but I have seen a lot of his post's, and personal attack's is what he does for the most part. I thought maybe it was just "dook" hating but I guess he "lashes out" at everybody. As far as Gary goes, it's no secret that he does not do what it takes to recruit better player's, he is a great coach, but this day and age you have to stay away from home for long periods of time, and he is not willing to do that.

I've been a Gary supporter since he's been at Maryland. I think his coaching job this season would be described as poor at best. I don't think he should be fired but he needs to re-evaluate his coaching style and recruiting methods. The turnovers and mental mistakes are inexcusable. Some of that falls on Gary but a large portion comes with inexperienced players in key roles. Vazquez better have a great offseason. He cannot be trusted at the point right now. This was a tough season. The ups and downs make it tough to watch. I'm still a die hard fan with high hopes for next year.

Gary needs to start going after the blue chip players. He's lost the ability to turn average players into stars (Juan Dixon) . With only 4 scholarships in the next two years it's going to be a tough road if these kids don't improve. Mosley and Gilchrest are comming in next year and the Korean big man in 09. They better be damn good if this team is going to compete in the ACC.

Look, Gary has lead us to 3 NITs in 4 years. We haven't won an ACC tourney game in 2 years. Can you say Hot Seat? We had another lead at halftime, and blew it again. Look, I don't like change, but what Gary's doing is unacceptable. That's on par for teams like Oregon and Syracuse, but not for us who were getting to Final Fours and winning a Championship.
Either he leaves this season, or one more year. He better recruit well this season because he hasn't been doing it well the past few.

Just my $.02, but I think we're all die hard terps fans. I think it's because we love our team so much that there's a lot of emotion behind wanting a coaching change.
I'm with you guys on replacing Gary. Too bad we'd have to waste a lot of money to get rid of him, but at least there might be progress for the team.
BTW, effin Raycom blacked out the ACC Tourney games anywhere outside of the East Coast. Just because we live on the west coast, doesn't mean we're not Terps anymore!!

3 out of 4 years of NIT? Winless in ACC tournament since 2004? Top scorer(Chris McCray) got academic dismissal from school in his senior year? Making the most turnover ratio among ACC schools? For all your Gary 's supporters out there: Is there any other good reason to reward him $2 million dollars salary a year? Please do tell! Coach K and Roy William don't even make that much.

Every school goes through a dry spell, maybe not as bad as 3 out of 4 years not making the tourney, but still. Gary IS Maryland Basketball. He started off with nothing. Gary Williams is the reason why we have high expectations, dont put all the blame on him. Some of it, but not all. We were the youngest team in the ACC. No one really thought we'd make the tournament at the start of the season, except for us.

justinterps, anyone who watched the last 3 games is a true fan. You cannot be a fairweather fan and be able to watch all 3 of those losses.

If you think Gary WIlliams is fired, you are stupid. You are literally a stupid human being, and I will directly insult you. Who cares if he deserves it? How old are you? How do you not know of a little thing called tenure? Gary has done enough for this program so that he will go out on his own terms, barring about 5 seasons with a losing record in a row or a scandal like Kelvin Sampson. Stop bickering about something that will not happen.

I personally don't think Gary should go, but he does need to be put on the hot seat. I think that his success has hurt him as a coach and recruiter. Also lets not forget that if he didn't have a team who 4 of the 5 starters went to the NBA, he's never gotten out of the sweet sixteen. I understand that he did get these players and develop them, but without the Dixon, Baxter, Blake, Wilcox team his NCAA tourney record is not impressive. We've had some bad losses in the tourney over the past few years and for a school that's smack in the middle of one of the top talent areas of the country, has a great campus, the Comcast Center and won a National Championship we should be recruiting better. I don't think that he should go, but I think that if he's put on the hot seat and thinks that his job might be in danger we might see better results.
