Jack Nicklaus loved the Masters Tournament and practically owned the course. As everyone knows, he won there 6 times, but that's only the half of it. Between 1970 and 1979 he won twice, had 2 second place finishes, 2 third place finishes, 2 fourth place finishes, and never finished lower than 8th. Overall, he had 22 top 10 finishes between 1961 and 1998, and there was a 23 year span between his first win there in 1963 and his last in 1986. I doubt anyone has ever done that in ANY tournament (TW will have a shot though.) Even at age 58 in 1998, he finished a very respectable T6. One other amazing stat: between 1960 and 1966, between Nicklaus and Palmer, they won 6 of the 7 Masters Tournaments (Gary Player sneaked in a win in 1961 to prevent a clean sweep.) I do miss watching Jack in the Masters, but fifteen years from now we'll be writing threads about TW's amazing stats at Augusta. I'm not sure he can top Nicklaus in top 10 finishes, but he will probably surpass his 6 wins there, and may even make it to double digits.

I did. indeed, find one golfer with a longer span between wins in the same tournament (and on the same course): Sam Snead first won the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938 and last won there in 1965, 27 years later. He won the GGO a record 8 times; not exactly on par with the Masters, but quite a feat anyway. The tournament is being played on a different course now (and under a different name), but back in those days was played on the old Sedgefield Course in Greensboro, NC.

Not trying to beat this to death, but I just read that the Wyndham Championship (formerly the GGO) will be played at the Sedgefield Country Club starting again this August, and from now on. The Sedgefield Course was designed by legendary golf course architect Donald Ross, who also designed 3 of the famous Pinehurst courses, among hundreds of others, and the Wyndham Championship will be the only tournament on the regular tour being played on one of his courses. The course just underwent a $3-million renovation and has been lengthened from 6,650 yards to over 7,100 yards, but will still play as a par 70. The Wyndham Championship may be worth watching this year just to see Sedgefield again! With its storied history, I wouldn't be surprised to see Tiger in this tournament within the next few years.

the pats know: great post ... that was one of my all time favorite moments in golf when Nicklaus won the Masters that final time. Somewhere around 1977 when I was overseas, I predicted to a friend that Nicklaus would never win another major after he blew the lead in one on the final day and lost. Fortunately, I was wrong since he came back with another victory in the British Open in 1978 and the US Open in 1980. But the '86 win was something special since he came from behind on the back 9 to pull that one out after everyone had pretty much written him off. I think even Jack was surprised!
