So I needed to take a little time to get the guy under contract (so as i did not jinx everything), but I am fully in favor of this hire and I am not sure that we could have made a better hire. What we need at Berkeley are instant results. Before I go on any further I want to say that I have read some chatter about Braun and I am not happy about any type of Braun bashing. While his message was clearly not getting through anymore, I think fondly on his tenure in Berkeley and hope he finds a job in the Midwest where the student body and alumni will appreciate what he brings to a campus community. As for Montgomery, any Cal fan who has a problem hiring a guy who wins at a 70% clip in the Pac-10, regardless of where he coached is a moron. The guy has great X's and O's and his brand of coaching works in the college game. One of the unique things about coaching in the college game are the contacts in a given geographic region, now Bennett at St. Mary's is the only other coach being considered by Cal who shares these Bay Area roots with Montgomery. Furthermore as the coach at Stanford he understand how to coach at a school that must balance a strong academic reputation with the athletics. While Montgomery is 61 years old, and it is unlikely he will sign another contract after the 6 year one he just inked is completed, I am confident the he will leave the program in good hands. While I know Johnson got his first taste of head coaching at Nevada, he was a longtime assistant with Montgomery at Stanford, leaving me with hope that he will produce a coaching protege who would build on what Montgomery begins. Furthermore, D.J. Seeley, a point guard coming in from Modesto is noted for his high basketball i.q. and should fit extraordinarily well in the system Montgomery will install. The only problem I foresee is on the recruiting trail. I know that sounds strange but he never recruited the Bay Area well, or California for that matter in his tenure at Stanford. He was able to recruit nationally and get guys to commit from all over the nation, I fear that Braun, and Floyd will be able to out muscle him, and Kent up and Oregon consistently is able to pull guys out of Northern California. If Montgomery can get 20 wins and an NCAA berth next year, and get some four star recruits into Hearst (as I will not say Haas) the sleeping giant could finally be awakened. But, short of that, I just want to be relevant in the Pac-10, I want people to hate the trip to Berkeley, and I want to go into Maples and smack those Cardinal.
