Does Kansas winning the National Championship change your view of them as one of the top 5 programs?

There have been countless debates about what is the best program in college basketball. Thus there have been numerous lists compiled of what are the top 5 schools in histroy. It is the general concensus that Kentucky, UCLA, UNC, Kansas, Indiana, and Duke make up the top 6. But most people had Kansas in that 6 spot due to their recent lack of a Championship.

So does this title vault them into the top 5 in your opinion? And now what are your top 6 programs of all time?

  • UCLA (they have the titles.. even though I have some issues with them)
  • Kansas (tradition + recent success)
  • Duke (little tradition pre-Zryskskaiieka)
  • Indiana (have the titles.. but little recent success)

1.  Kansas (tradittion, consistancy, great coaches, class, allen fieldhouse, the phog)

2.  Kentucky (most wins, and your welcome for Rupp from Halstead KS)

3.  UNC  ( great program,  your welcome for Dean Smith played at KU)

4.  UCLA  (one excellent coach, recruiter, unbelievable run- not too bad these day either)

5.  IU (we are talking about all times, 5 and 6 would switch if we were talking more   recent times)

6. Duke ( great coach, growing in tradition, great players)

All of these programs have a key element to their success Great Coaching, Great recruiting, Great fans, and the love of basketball.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who spells dooks coaches name on purpose! I'd have UCLA, Kentucky, UNC, Kansas and Indiana as my top 5.

    2. Kentucky. 7 NCAA Titles under 4 different coaches.

    3. North Carolina- Dean Smith, Roy Williams and they have a fair share of NCAA Titles.

    4. Indiana

    5. Kansas

    6. Duke

Curious why so many place Indiana ahead of Kansas

    • Indiana
    • 5 National Championships
    • 8 Final Fours
    • 35 Tourny Apperances
    • 20 League Championships
    • ____ All-Americans
    • ____ All time wins

    • Kansas
    • 3 National Championships
    • 2 Helms Titles
    • 13 Final Fours
    • 37 Tourny Apperances
    • 51 League Championships
    • 36 All-Americans
    • 3rd All time wins

If anyone could fill in the blanks I would appreciate it.

I guess its a matter of opinion.. but I think Kansas has a stronger histroy then Indiana and more recent success. Even if you dont count this years title, Kansas has still been a fixture at the top of College Basketball for the past decade. Something Indiana can't say. They do have 2 more NCAA titles which is impressive. But that alone doesnt vault them above Kansas IMO.

Jawhk the reason i put IU ahead of the jayhawks is the fact that they have more national titles and that they sustained their success for a long period of time. When I think of IU I think of the tradition and the recruits Bob Knight brought in. I just don't see that tradition of a great coach with countless wins at KU like Indians.

Also I don't take into account the helms titles.

Fair enough. Its a matter of opinion.

they sustained their success for a long period of time

But what has Indiana done in the last 20 years? and your point about having longer sustained succes.. Kansas is 3rd on the all-time wins list. I believe Indiana is around 7th.

May not have the titles.. but Phog Allen is known as the father of college basketball coaching.. and what about Roy, Larry Brown, Ted Owens? Where they not great coaches. Kansas only has 1 coach with a losing record in their history.. James Naismith.
