I never watched those stupid tapes or bought any golf training aides either. I think they are a huge waste.
I've always had someone knowledgeable take a look at my swing and tell me what my flaws are. It doesn't take a pro to see you may be a little flat or taking it off plane and have an"outside loop" in your swing.
Don't try to make any changes on the course though. The range is for training. The course is for using what you learned at the range.
I see so many people try to practice on the course it makes me laugh. While you are playing, your shots are so few and far between, you can't build up any muscle memory. That is all golf is, muscle memory. While you're on the range, can you develop a "groove" and get rid of your bad habits and form better habits. Who wants to miss an approach shot, to a short par four after a great drive, because they are going to change their thought process for that one shot, and try to make their swing more upright? I want to make birdies when I get into those situations! I don't want to chunk it because I tried a different swing plane.
Be aware though that too much time at the range can also form bad habits, if you don't know what to practice. After a while on the range I can practically dance and hit a solid shot. I call that just beating balls, not practicing. I have to periodically stop stretch a little, change clubs and start over methodically. Other times I try to "play" my favorite hole in my head. I will hit a driver and then take a 3-4 minute break and then use the club I normally have for an approach on my "dream" hole. This way I can get feedback as far as whether my practice will pay off or not on the course. I also get out of that beating balls syndrome.
However you get help is up to you but check out th course that you frequent. Most times, if you have a good pro, you can get some pointers without having to pay for lessons. If not the pro, then ask someone at the range who seems like they have a fundamentally solid swing, to look at you. You'd be surprised how many good golfers will give you help if you'd ask.
