- John Smoltz has never pitched a major league game in any other uniform, so therefore he is home grown talent. Smoltzie was scouted and drafted by Detroit, but he never pitched a game in a detroit Tigers uniform. Thus, saying John Smoltz isn't home grown talent is just plain ignorant.
Um, no. Homegrown talent is when you draft, rear in the minors, and ultimately plug into your major league club. Not when you trade Doyle Alexander to another to the Tigers for a nearly major league ready pitcher. Smoltz was not home grown by Atlanta. Whether or not he pitched a game for them is irrelevant. He came via trade, end of story. So to say Smoltz is home-grown is whats ignorant.
