I don't know.  I like the Buffalo boy, of course.  But I'm actually leaning toward Jonathan Toews as being the best rookie.  I didn't get to see much Blackhawk hockey this year, so I base this only on a few clips and the fact that Patrick Kane's numbers dropped in the period in January when Toews was out of the lineup, showing how much of an impact he actually made in production for that lineup.  As far as winning the Calder, I'm not sure how much missing 18 games would play into his chances of winning, but if you look at points per game he was pretty much in line with the other candidates (Kane with about 0.87 ppg and the other two with about 0.84).  Backstrom is also very good, and all three had spectacular rookie seasons, but I'd put the two Hawks ahead of him because his numbers may be skewed a bit from playing on the same line as Ovie all season.

All three players are great. And all three have extremely bright futures ahead of them. But... no Carey Price? Anybody else think he should have been part of the nominee pool?

I think if Carey Price had been the starter all year, he would be here. There were many good rookies this year, but I think they got it right with these three guys as the finalists. I can't imagine the voters going with anyone other than Patrick Kane. Too man writers will attribute Niklas Backstrom's big assist number to playing with Alexander Ovechkin. But all three of these finalists will have long careers in this league.

Toews' injury will take him out of the running and stop the vote from being split.  I agree; it has to be Kane.

Agreed.

Toews is in the running because he was great while he played, and so was Price. If they both played all year, it would have been a really tight race.

But I'll take Kane.

I did not realize that Kane won the scoring race by one point,.  Coupled with more goals, that should be enough to give him the trophy but he was playing on a non-playoff team.  I wonder how many votes will go to Backstrom because he played on the comeback team of the year?

Its too bad that Toews got hurt, as he would have won it for sure!

It's quite difficult not to see Price in the running, but it is understandable. Someone mentioned that if he had of started more games then he'd be in the running and I completely agree with this. The argument could have been made that Toews didn't play every game either, but before his injury he was probably the early favourite and didn't tail off much when he came back. Kane and Backstrom were 1-2 in rookie scoring so they were sure bets to be finalists.
