I do not criticize the 9ers for not going for a WR in the earlier rounds  I am happy with most of the picks tell you the truth.  However the one I have a hard time swallowing is our first pick.

Kentwan Balmer...

I dont even mind that he is a DT since we do need to bolster our D-LIne.

But why this guy??

From his Bio he didn't do anything his first 3 seasons, and he had a decent season this past season.  WIth 59 tackles and 3.5 sacks.  Am I missing something here???  I can honestly say I don't know much about this guy.  But he sounds like another mediocre tackle such as FIelds, Sopoaga, and Franklin.  I just don't get it.  Someone help me out here.  Wasn't Quinten Groves thought as a excellent pass rusher, which is what we need.

Can someone please enlighten me on this decision.

His numbers are pretty good seeing as he was double teamed a lot and there was no one else on North Carolina's defense to take the pressure off of him. He is extremely strong and very fast for his size and no one is questioning his abilities. It is true that he never really produced until last year but I attribute that to the fact that before then he never had a decent coach. The only knock on him is that he is a 'boom or bust' pick but so were Vernon Davis and Manny Lawson and no one complained when we drafted them.

I'm a 49ers fan who lives in Wisconsin, and the only thing about this pick that worries me is that he is undersized.  I remember the Pack took Jamal Reynolds in the first round some years back hoping he would bulk up and be a force on the d-line, but he never panned out and they ended up wasting a first round pick and three or four years on him.

Thanks for that info, I don't follow College Football that much.  I had no clue about NC's DL.

I do disagree with you on the "boom or bust" comment.  I don't think "boom or bust" players are drafted in the 1st round.  I think most players drafted in the 1st round are expect to "boom".  I especially never thought of Vernon Davis and Manny Lawson as a "boom or bust" player when they were drafted.

I think the problem rests with the front office and a coach that does not have a clue about managing in the NFL.  Dick Nolan does not understand the formula to win.  If in fact,  Alex Smith is a NFL caliber quarterback, he needs receivers who can go to the ball.

No question there is problems on both sides of the ball, but this pic is average at best based on the needs of the 49ers to get back on a winning track.

The next draft needs to start with a new coaching staff and front office personal.  Let alone, a President of Football Operations that has the family way far in the distance.

Then it might start to come together again.  Until then we will languish in the bottom of the NFL

Orbear,

Who do you mean by the front office?  The yorks?

Also Dick Nolan?  Our coaches name is Mike Nolan.  Dick Nolan is his father, former 9er coach, that passed away.

Even though I was confused about the pick, I am not going as far as judging it without the man stepping on the field or calling it "average at best."  I do have faith in Mike Nolan and Mcloughan.  They have an eye for talent.  They finally brought in talent to the team.  Just compare the personel today to the team they inherited.  They did pick Gore, Lawson, Davis, Willis, and Staley.  So I would hold off on the judgements until you see the man play.

I do have faith in Coach Nolan.  He was given a crappy team with no talent whatsoever.  He has brought in a lot of talent. He has been given the responsibility of coaching an extremely young team with 4 differnent OC.  He has had to deal with different defensive coordinators as well, however, he is a good defensive coach.  He is lacking on the offensive side of the ball.

I think with Mike Martz calling the plays on offense.  We will finally have a team that will challenge for the NFC west crown.

First and foremost we as Niner fans should understand why we didnt pick up a WR in the draft. This draft was full of number two wideouts, no one really stood out as a reciever who would dominate in the NFL which is why we made offseason moves to acquire Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson, and this year hopefully if and when Vernon comes out of his shell we should have legit passing threats. As for our first pick in Kentwan Balmer we needed to fill the tackle position after losing Bryant Young. Kentwan wasnt even switched to DT till his junior year and then butch davis came and lit a fire under his ass. He's excited to be in the NFL and claims to want to make a name for himself saying he wants to be the next reggie white or mean joe green http://youtube.com/watch?v=1B9lWT9UymI. he's strong and uncharacteristically fast at his position. Nolan is a smart defensive coach and sees potential in this kid. As for Quinten Groves im still confused why we didnt pick him up especially since we are running the 3-4. The real reason this draft has given me hope is the addition to the offensive line, I'm ready for next season and we as Niner fans should support our coaching decisions until we these prospects give us reason otherwise.

Kudoa ninertime52.  I agree totally with everything you said.  One more thing on Balmer.  He is from the bay area and is a Niner fan.  For some reason I like that in a player.  Makes me think they will give 100% every play when it is their favorite team.

Balmer, Kentwan he's from nc; not bay area.his dad was a fan of niners when bill walsh was coaching.he has the ability to play any line position we need him to,but his main job is to keep linemen off willis.he does that and willis will waltz in to pro bowl. at 6-5 298lbs he's not small. the knot on him is lower body strenght. got to do lot of leg excerises to devolop lower body.look for him to be real good in a year or two.

Rachal, Chilo is a good pick as guard should end up starting next season

Smith, Reggie can play any db position and in third he was a steal

Wallace, Cody can play guard but is a great center strong runblocker reasonable passblocker a starter by 3rd season. may even start before that. he's a Larry Allen strong guy 480 bench press

Morgan, Josh this guy is a true boom or bust pick. he's boom if gets consistant hands he's bust if he don't

Grant, Larry he's solid player can play any lb position and has pass coverage skills has more of chance to make team then you might think. a real steal for 7th rounder. known for blocking kicks

so as far as i'm concern not bad draft. just wish they had drafted a 3rd o-linemen that 55 sacks was not a good o-line sign. and for those of you who wanted a top wr the best wr in the draft did not go until comp picks in third round.caldwell and he has health questions. deshaun jackson is a slot wr not a #1 wr
