It was brought up in another post the possibility of Greg Maddux finishing his career as a Cub. Here are my thoughts why this may actually make sense, or at least why he may be a Cub by the end of 2008:

Obviously it's just over a month into the season, but the Padres are only 14-24 this season. They need some hitting, and I'm thinking a deadline deal of Maddux for a prospect could very easily work out if their woes continue.

Maddux has an ERA of just 3.60 this season, and that INCLUDES the game where he gave up nine earned runs in seven innings because the Padres needed to keep him out there after their 22-inning game. I like the idea of him finishing at least this season with the Cubs. And if he's still effective, I say you sign him for to a career-finishing contract.

I thought that when we finally picked him (Greg Maddux) back up that we would keep him. I was wrong because we squandered him away again. I really don't think it's a possibility to bring him back. He would help our team. A good veteran pitcher who is liked by all. He could finish as a Cub and one day be our pitching coach. I'm not gonna hold my breath though. Also, I'm sure that the Padres would want way too much for that trade. This is like the earlier talks about getting back Kenny Lofton or Juan Pierre for CF before the season began. I just don't see it happening. Besides I think we would need to go after a lefty. I guess we'll see what happens though.

Maddux stated a preference to pitch close to his home in So Cal when he had the chance to stay with the Cubs. Did he give himself up so the Cubs could get some help or did the Cubs turn their back on him when they might have kept him on the roster similar to the assumed scenario when he left for the Braves?

The question is also, how much does trading Maddux away hurt the Padres financially? Do they sell more tickets, sell more concessions when the Mad Dog pitches? Aside from Peavy the Padres don't have much on their pitching staff to keep the fans interested.

Would I like to see Maddux in a Cubbie uni once again especially if they make a run at the World Series?  You bettcha, do I see it as a possiblility? That question can only be answered by Jim Hendry in the long run.

Palmetto, I was just about to say the same thing.  Greg Maddux chose to pitch for the Padres because he wants to be close to his home in Vegas.  I doubt he would be traded to back to Chicago, although I would be very pleased with that move.

I don't think the Cubs burned any bridges with Maddux when they traded him, because they traded him to a place closer to Vegas.

Also, just to point out Maddux's ERA this year, he is pitchig in PETCO Park, which is huge, and always aids pitcher's ERA.

i know he wants to stay in SoCal... but maybe that horrific offense will make him change his mind... I think the Cubs and Braves both make a big push for him at the trade deadline... those are probably the only 2 teams he'd want to finish the year and perhaps his career with.

choose chicago, greg... we beg of you!

why would he come back and pitch for an organization that didnt want him in the first place. My guess is that he would rather defacate down your throats.

I think Greg Maddux would love to come back to Chicago. We certainly haven't burned any bridges with him, and no rivers have run dry. Plus, at age 42, you have to think that Maddux would want to play for a contender down the stretch because this could be his last opportunity. He loves Chicago, and he's loved the time he spent here. I also think he could come to us at a relatively affordable price, prospect-wise. Perhaps... Matt Murton?

I suppose the issue is does it matter if Greg Maddux wants out at the deadline? I'm not sure he's the type of guy to DEMAND a trade, but that's my opinion. As far as when he made the decision to go to San Diego, I'm still not sure that means he won't go somewhere with a winning team. Say at the All-Star Break the Padres are 35-50 or something like that, and the Cubs are 50-35 or so with the NL Central lead. I can imagine he would be intrigued, and the Padres would then offer him to us. As mentioned, how much would we owe? Well, you could argue the Padres may be stuck-up and ask for too much, but at the same time, by then, they may be so desperate that they take a couple "prospects" for him. How great would that be to have Greg Maddux back in Chicago?

He's not coming back people would I like it to happen sure but it just ain't going to happen. He wants to be close to home that is the reason he was traded in the first place why would he want to come back to Chicago makes no sense to me.

Ok, we have a thread calling for Gallagher to be placed in the roatation.  We have another complaining that Marshall has not been given a fair chance in ST nor now to be in the rotation.   We all hope Rich Hill finds his command.

As great as Greg Maddux has been and as much as I respect him, you guys are all over the place with desires for the rotation.  Lou Piniella, reportedly is considering giving Gallagher Liebers's spot.  Very few have any love for Marquis, but the question becomes who do you want to relplace him?  Greg Maddux, Rich Hill, Sean Marshall, or that mysterious pitcher that someone starts a thread saying Hendry needs to trade for?  Now, I haven't looked at each thread to see which individual poster, in essence, is arguing for a 7 or 8 man rotation.  And, I know the boards are for opinions and we are all fans who just want to win.......

But, if you step back and look at it objectively, all anyone needs to do is throw a pitcher"s name out there and off we go like a dog chasing his ball.  Let Hendry, Lou, and Rothschild figure out the rotation and their pitching needs.  As a group on these Cubs boards, we are just a tad indecisive.

If it doesn't warm up soon in the Windy City, I'd say there's a snowball's chance in hell.
