OK now my turn...
You're absolutely correct in that Quinn hasn't proven a thing, but you can't have it both ways. In your analysis you've considered other players (none starters, new acquisitions, and unproven rookies) as a basis for your assessment. For example, if you disregarded Mendenhall I'm not sure I would agree that the Steelers have the edge at the RB position. I just think you need to apply the same logic to all positions.
Well said dawgdaze. That truly did not occur to me even. You can also add to that list Justin Hartwig and the guard taking over for Faneca (his name escapes me and I don't feel like looking back through this thread). Both players have not proven themselves in the Pittsburgh system, yet they are considered upgrades. Then you have Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers who are the same (unproven in the system) for the Browns, yet considered to be questionable acquisitions. That is a complete double standard.
Gotta jump in here...this is the same system in which Frye bombed so badly...Guess the Steelers need Dixon to come in and light up some preseason prevent defense and then we can talk about our outstanding QB depth.
FOT, lets compare apples to apples here. In no way did anyone on this board say that "Quinn lit up teams in preseason which shows his ability". We all are intelligent fans and know that Quinn played against guys who never saw the field last year. As far as Charlie Frye goes, two things with that.
1. That was the first game of the year. As I said earlier, offensive lines need time to clique. The team had new additions to the line who had never played together. They allowed so much pressure in the backfield it was rediculous.
2. You cannot in any way possible compare Charlie Frye to Brady Quinn. Charlie Frye was a 3rd round pickup who became QB by way of default when we lost Jeff Garcia. He was a poor decision maker win college when he played for University of Akron, and he was a poor decision maker (especially under pressure) when he played with the Browns. His unsuccessful game was due to poor decision making. This is Quinn's strongest point.
Secondly, I completely agree with Mano ad think that many Browns fans are too blindly optimistic about Quinn. Again, he hasn't played a significant down in an NFL game. He's in the same spot right now that Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, David Klinger, and Andre Ware were right after they were drafted. Every team felt "confident" in their respective 1st round QB selection's ability to "succeed withing (their) system." Granted, Quinn could go on to become the second coming of John Elway, but the point is this: No one can definitively say whether he'll succeed or be a bust. Remember for every Peyton Manning there is at least one Alex Smith. I'd take a known entity who is can at least manage the game, if not better, at backup any day ("bird in hand...").
HoyaParanoia07,
Welcome to the party, but you walked into this. I have more Steeler fan friends than I do Browns, simply because I live in Pittsburgh. And there is one thing that I can tell you for certain...You can add Ben Roethlisberger to the list you supplied of fans being "blindly optimistic" about. Just like Ryan Leaf, David Klinger, Akili Smith, and Tim Couch, the Steeler nation was high as high can be after they drafted Ben. And if you think back, you should remember when Tom Maddux began "stinking", there were chants going through the stands for Big Ben to play. Luckily, Tommy Maddux got hurt, and Big Ben never looked back. Now explain how this is any different than the Browns being high on Quinn? I will take the liberty of explaining for you...The only difference is that we not only have a quality 1st round pick...but we also have a pro-bowl starter!
Add me to the flabbergasted club. Here's my question. How can you say Quinn is better than Jim Sorgi? Sorgi is intelligent (not sure if he's from Ohio) and he's been in the system for at least 5 years.
beachbum,
you just lost all credibility with that statement. Did you not watch the last game of the season for the Colts when the played the Titans. I, yes myself the skid kid, could have played better than Sorgi did in that game.
If Mike and Mike said that in the context you are saying it I think I'll have to stop watching them!
I guess your days of watching Mike and Mike are over. I believe it was Tuesday or Wednesday after Free Agency started, and they were having Phil Savage on the GM Onstar Hotline to discuss their offseason moves.
Let me reiterate. I would take Big Ben as our starter in a heartbeat! But, when you compare the situation of backups and quality depth, IMHO I think the Browns have the edge. If Big Ben, and DA both go down after game one, the Browns I THINK...would be more successful for the remainder of the season. To me that has to give the Browns the edge. Especially since there has been sooo much talk about the Steelers "injury bug" last year.
