Why does it seem that every year we get stuck with a pitcher who's supposed to be the answer to our woes, and he COMPLETELY blows it for the season? Examples last year are Anthony Reyes and Kip Wells especially. I mean, Kip Wells was just HORRIBLE for us as a free-agent pickup. Anthony Reyes wasn't much better, maybe even worse. And this year, at least for now it appears to be Kyle Lohse. He's been horrific the last few games, giving up at least 4 runs each game in a very short amount of time. Why does it seem like we always get dead eggs like this? Any thoughts from the Redbird Nation?

In defense of Kyle Lohse, the bullpen has blown 2 games of his where he pitched a gem. With those 2 wins it would put him at 5-2 which is nice. His era is a little high but alot of that has to do with the error Ryan made in his last start where Lohse gave up 4 unearned runs, it was later changed to a hit and not an error and that is why his era is high right now. I don't think anyone considered Lohse to be the answer to our woes. He was signed to give the Cardinals a little stability in the rotation and I think he has done that.

Sunny&Ben-
I agree with you bud. Those unearned runs is what has hurt not only Lohse but what has hurt our other starters as well. After all, that's why it's so important for us to get ahead early in the game. It's no sectet that whoever scores first has a bit better chance of winning that game. It gets into the pitchers head - whether it be our pitcher or theirs - and it takes the edge out of that pitcher. Besides, like you, I haven't heard anyone say that Lohse was the bona fide answer to our pitching woes. He was brought in to eat innings so our bullpen would be less overworked and so far he's done a pretty good job.
The main point here is when your defense lets you down it will get to any pitcher - whether it's Roy Oswalt, Brandon Webb, Johan Santana, Kyle Lohse etc..

I agree with Card-68. A pitcher hates bad defense. Even worse is a blown. It infects the whole team with bad fibes.
Even worse, it causes starting pitchers to try to pitch complete games, ruining their arms. pipe

I realize Izzy is getting close to 300 saves, but it may be time to see if Chris Perez can close games in the majors. If you can't put the guy(Izzy) in the game and have any feeling at all that he will be successful - DON'T PUT HIM IN. Right now the only time he isn't going to hurt us is if it is already a blowout in the other teams favor.
We should have at least a 2 game lead in the division.

I agree with you Brent. Please TRL put Izzy on the DL!!! If we had half of his blown saves back we would be in first. I do not mind struggling with injuries, but Izzy should just pitch batting practice in Memphis. We are in to tight of a race especially since the Brewers might be a challenger for the wild card spot. We have half a season left. How many chances are you going to give this guy? I mean we probably won the World Series, because of Izzy's absence, so can we not get Perez up to get some experience before late in the year when we are going to be in a tight playoff race. Look at Wainright in 2006. I could care less about Izzy's 300th save. Right now the only place I want to see him pitch is for the Cubs. He is the best around at blowing it.

talking about pitching disasters izzy pitches yesterday goes 1-2-3, then comes into today and give up 4 runs, makes an error, where is his head at. The cards should say that something is wrong with his arm and put him on the DL to give him a break to get his head on straight.

The Cards need to trade him if anyone wants him or release him because if not aTony will keep putting him in there. they need to call up Chris Perez because i am sure he cant do no worse and he will be able to get his feet wet. i wouldnt have him close yet i would give him the 7 or 8 and let Franklin close.

I still believe st.louis has a pretty good pitching staff , but looking into the future they need to start developing some young arms in there farm system instead of going out and getting burned out arms, at the present st.louis has no young talent at the pitcher spot, i believe ankiel was suppose to be the last st louis pitching star before he got hurt and thats been a pretty long time ago. I dont see any stars in there future
