Why is this guy still our pitching coach?  Does no one else feel like this is getting out of control.  Every pitcher he touches, gets worse, Verlander, Robertson and Bonderman have all gotten worse, Rodney can't even throw and we have not had one fixture in the bullpen.  Lee Mazzone is somewhere on a rocking chair in Georgia having had one of the best track records with pitchers ever, while we let Hernandez take every pitcher we have and bury him.  Someone tell me if I am out of line here but I just feel like Leyland should start to take some heat for maybe being a little too loyal to his coaching staff, Hernandez has to go.  Let me know what you think Tigers fans, because this is incredibly disappointing.

Although I have been one his bigger critics I can't blame him for Rodney. Remember Rodney had Tommy John surgery before 2006 and has a history of arm trouble so I can't blame him for that. My issue with their coach is the fact he really has no track record as a pitching coach except being the minor league pitching coordinator for Tampa Bay ( when their pitching was bad ). I have to agree that the starters have regressed under his watch ( not counting Rogers because pitching coaches are more for the younger ones ) . Yes Jim Leyland is too loyal to his coaches but in my opinion Chuck Hernandez is not what I consider a quality major league pitching coach.

Maybe we should start looking for a new pitching coach.  This doesn't explain why we can't get a hit when we have runners on base , however. Nothing is working for us right now. I do tend to agree on our pitching staff though, we have to do something soon.

Let me chime in on this from another angle. A.J.Sager pitching coach for the Toledo Mudhens is doing a fine job. Worked early in the season with Armando Galarraga and his continued to do a quality job at Toledo. Previously was the pitching coach at AA Erie and A Grand rapids for the Tiger organization. Tiger prospects Eddie Bonine ( 8-0, 3.09 era ) and Blaine Neal ( 1.09 era and 14 for 14 in saves ) have actually improved ( he actually coached Bonine at AA last season ) despite not being labeled top tier prospects. So you see it is possible for a pitching coach to have a positive impact. Furthermore all the pitchers he has throw strikes. My choice is to promote Chuck Hernandez to some type of scouting position like he had in Tampa and hand the reigns over to A. J. Sager before another team grabs him in the off season.

I think the front office has got to shake things up, whether its McLendon or Hernandez, or both.  Something needs to happen to wake everybody up before the season is lost.

Isn't Chuck the same guy we all thought was a genius two years ago when the Tigers won the A.L.?   Not saying he doesn't need to go, just weird how fast a guy can go from pent house to out house.....

Can't blame Chuck for :

* D-Railed Willis, he didn't trade for him, and he was damaged goods when received.

*  Not sure if you can blame him for K. Rogers he was due for a break down and has been on borrowed time the past few seasons.

* He also didn't tell Zumaya to play Guitar Hero or move boxes during a fire.

* He didn't decide to let Chad Durban go and keep Grili and Miner.

* Keeping T. Jones as the closer.

* Rodney's injury is hard to blame on the pitching coach.

* He didn't trade Miller and Jurrjenns away.

Might be able to blame Chuck for:

* Verlander, Robertson and Bonderman. He doesn't seem to be able to help them.

When a team with this high of expectations is in last place and struggling in every aspect of the game there is plenty of blame to go around.

Well put..........Hernandez is being labeled the scapegoat for two reasons:

1. He probably hasn't helped the staff much this year......but the real reason he's catching all the flak..............

2. No one wants to stand up and put the blame on Leyland and Dombrowski. Afterall weren't these the "architects" of the 2006 team that surprised us and brought long suffering Tiger fans relief? It can't be their fault!

Fine....give them credit for 2006 "miracle" (also known as the mirage of Brandon Inge, Marcus Thames, and Craig Monroe). But haven't great "architects" also created some real stinko structures? IMO, Hernandez is getting the flak because Leyland and Dumbrowski are TEFLON-coated. I'm a fan who thinks the players should take the heat - not the coaches. But if we are going to start point fingers at the coaching staff.....you better start pointing at Leyland.
