Not again: Umpires miss another home run call

HOUSTON -- Another night, another botched home run call by an umpire.

This time it didn't cost the team any runs as Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto got an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning Monday night against the Houston Astros.

Soto's three-run shot bounced just to the right of the yellow line on the wall in left-center field and replays showed it should have been an automatic home run. Astros center fielder Michael Bourn scooped it up and threw it home, but Soto scored easily before the throw got there.

New York Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado was robbed of a three-run homer Sunday night. Delgado's ball was originally ruled a home run but the call was reversed, turning it into a long foul ball. The replay of that play showed it should have been a home run.

Delgado ended up with an RBI single.

It was the first inside-the-park home run for a catcher since Joe Mauer of the Twins hit one against the Angels on July 21 according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The last National League catcher to achieve the feat was Kelly Stinnett for Arizona on Aug. 29, 2005.

It's the first one for the Cubs since Derrek Lee hit one on Aug. 26 and the third in Minute Maid Park history.

If you don't know what I mean when I say that I think replays should be used only when their is a grouped umpire review...well this is what I mean.

When there is a questionable call and it requires more than one umpire to make the call, with the exception of the third\first base appeal on a(n)  un\checked swing, I think replays should be used.  If the ...(more)

IL play scheduling can cost a team the difference in making the playoffs, and water down the World Series, but people are talking about this.  Why can't people see the idiocracy of IL play?!?!?!?  I don't care if "idiocracy" is a word or not!  Nothing's as ignorant or useless as IL play.

The ball was clearly a home run!  Way above the yellow line, and above the triangle between the vertical and horizotal line.  Luckily Soto runs well and the Cubs still get the run.

then here is a thought.  Every time the umps huddle together to  discuss a call they should just make sure one of them can see the Jumbotron so they can sneak a peak and get it right.  I could swear one of them did that about a week ago on catch by Ichiro.  Why they are so  resistant to a replay system is beyond me.  I certainly don't think the NFL version would work, ...(more)

These games run long enough. It would be so time consuming to add replay to the games. There are so many play that could be replayed in regards to defensive plays and close calls. If MLB does decide to implement replay, then pitching has to be completely out of the question. Every pitch could be challenged. This whole idea should be put on the kabosh. Baseball has been going much longer than the o ...(more)

In the time it took the umpires to discuss the call they could check with replay and get it right! Run changing calls should be important to replay.

Why would we need instant replay in baseball?  Homeruns are the only thing that may be of concern.  But really, those are few a far betweeen that are that close.  It's not like in football where there's a few plays every game that are hard to tell if the ball was caught, or if a foot was in bound, or basketball with a foot near the three point line.  Human error is p ...(more)
