Norton broke a seventh-inning tie with a bases-loaded, pinch-hit single, and Atlanta beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 for its fifth straight win. "It was big," Norton said. "I know that's my role, to try to help the team coming off the bench. To actually do it, it was a big moment for me."

    News
The Atlanta Braves finally won a one-run game when Matt Diaz hit a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to beat the San Diego Padres 5-4 on Thursday. Diaz lined a 2-2 pitch to left to drive in Yunel Escobar. MLB.com notes that Diaz will be in the Braves lineup at least four times in the next six days. That doesn't mean, however, that Atlanta manager Bobby Cox has abandoned his left-field platoon of rookie Gregor Blanco and the veteran Diaz. The Braves are in a stretch where almost all they will see are left-handed starters, giving the right-handed-hitting Diaz plenty of playing time after a couple of weeks where he hardly started at all.

Shoulder/biceps - 15-day DL. Out until at least late May (Updated - 4/29/08)
    News
Braves P John Smoltz hopes to persuade the Braves' medical staff to allow him to resume throwing as early as Sunday. Smoltz has been sidelined for two weeks because of biceps and rotator cuff problems in his right arm. A starter when the season began, Smoltz will go into the bullpen once he returns. He anticipates having some pain when he starts throwing, but is optimistic it will be minimal and the discomfort will go away sometime this season. "I don't want to keep losing so much ground," Smoltz said Saturday. "Tomorrow will be two weeks without picking up a ball. I hope that it's not much longer, so I can start getting into a routine."
