Pedro Martinez plans to throw a simulated game against minor leaguers Wednesday, another step toward returning to the New York Mets' rotation from a frustrating leg injury. Martinez, who strained his left hamstring April 1 during his season debut, 1, threw a bullpen session Monday. The injury has been difficult for the three-time Cy Young Award winner to handle, especially because he missed most of the 2007 season following right rotator cuff surgery. "Not depressed, I'm not that kind of person that gets depressed, but it's frustrating how hard I worked," Martinez said. "My arm is feeling great. My arm really hasn't given me any problems and now a hamstring. A hamstring, out of all cases a hamstring. Go figure."

The Sports Xchange reports that Mets RP Matt Wise, on the DL with a strained forearm, was in New York over the weekend, but returned to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Wise is eligible to come off the disabled list, but with the possible need to bring up a pitcher from the minor leagues to make an emergency start and an injury to 2B Luis Castillo that could require a DL stint, the Mets are waiting before making a move.

Carlos Beltran and Ryan Church hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning to support Oliver Perez and lead the New York Mets to an 8-3 victory Sunday over the bumbling Cincinnati Reds. Perez (3-3) got his first win since April 19, though the left-hander still had trouble with his command at times. Perez cruised through the first four innings, allowing just one hit. His control started to waver in the fifth, when he walked Jeff Keppinger and hit Ryan P. Freel with a pitch that bounced in the dirt. But he struck out Joey Votto to escape the jam. Perez fanned left-handed hitters Votto, Paul Bako and Adam Dunn two times apiece. Perez lasted just six innings, allowing three hits and three runs. He walked four and struck out eight.
