The record and run differential (+33) say they're pretty OK, but they were swept in the one series they played this month against a legit contender ... The next 11 days, which include games in New York and four against the White Sox, should prove didactic ... File under "massively unsustainable:" The Twinkies' .314 batting average with runners in scoring position is not a typo.

Johan who? The Twins have solid starting pitching without Santana. We don't see them winning 90 games, which is their current pace, but their pitchers can really pound the strike zone. They have the fewest walks in the league, even if they are hittable. Only the Rangers and Pirates have given up more hits.

Thanks to a 10-game winning streak against the NL, the Twins look capable of staying in this race perhaps as long as the Rays and A's do now. It will be interesting to see what they can do against the AL's best.

They are 8-1 in their past nine games thanks to interleague play. They get a couple more NL sets to fatten up before a three-game set vs. the equally resurgent Tigers early next week. Should be an interesting one.

Francisco Liriano (3-0, 2.79 ERA in June) has to be getting real antsy back in Triple-A. His return should be considered imminent at this point. You cannot expect the 2006 version, but they will take something even well short of that kind of dominance.

The young rotation imploded at the wrong time against the first-place White Sox. You have to expect young pitching to struggle and shouldn't expect the Twins to be a true contender -- even in a down year in the AL Central.

Michael Cuddyer and Delmon Young are heating up, which is bad news for the AL Central teams hoping the Twins don't stick around until the return of Francisco Liriano. That should come this month. His command has improved in May.

They have held together with Francisco Liriano back in Triple-A. We might have seen the lefty return this weekend, but a bad start Monday for Rochester likely cools that timetable.

They are just 2-5 after reaching a season-high three games over .500. We like their chances of finishing over the break-even point a little bit better that those of some of the upstart teams above them here.

Like the A's and Rays, another surprising team built on pitching and defense. Unlike their counterparts, they have MVP-caliber bats in Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer. The AL Central doesn't want to let this team hang around while Francisco Liriano regains his command in Triple-A.
