Relax, Billy Wagner's shoulder is fine ... Other recent triumphs for which manager Jerry Manuel is singularly responsible: Mike Pelfrey's improved self-image, improved fourth-grade math scores in NYC schools, The Dark Knight ... That was a lovely winning streak and all, but few teams relying on bench fodder like Damion Easley, Endy Chavez and Fernando Tatis sustain their success for too long. Be wary.

Their recent play, especially in regard to their slumbering offense, is a sign they are not toast. The bullpen is still shaky, but if the rotation and offense continue improving that wart can come around. To win the NL East, they will need to add a corner outfielder. You cannot expect anything from Moises Alou (calf, age) or Ryan Church (post-concussion syndrome) in the second half. Barry Bonds?

Johan Santana and John Maine let them down recently. If those two aren't going to be shutdown aces, they might as well pack it in. This team has just no continuity offensively right now.

So, they changed their manager and are 3-3 under the new leadership. We say it every week, but until the players start performing over a long stretch, they are nothing more than a .500 team. Another weak, er week, is a perfect example of it.

They deserve criticism for many things. The timing or execution of firing Willie Randolph is not one of them. They desperately wanted it to work with him, but clearly the players were not among the "they." Jerry Manuel showed more life and personality in his news conference than Randolph showed in three years.
06/10/20081515
One step forward and two steps back. They are not a good offensive club. The bullpen is unreliable and the rotation seems to fail at inopportune times. We have said it a lot, but they are a sub-.500 team since June 1 of last year. That just shouldn't be.
06/03/20081521
OK, we buried them a little too far amid the May-laise, but we are still not convinced they are better than a .500 team. The return of Pedro Martinez won't matter until he pitches a number of healthy starts consecutively.
05/27/2008217
How more wrong could we have been about the preseason No. 1? This is truly an Amazin' Mess. Even firing the manager doesn't figure to stop the bleeding. This has been a sub-.500 team over the last calendar year -- 77-83 since May 29 of last year. Awful. Completely awful.
05/20/200877
The crew we called a .500 team dropped a four-game series to the last-place Nationals, but rebounded to bury the suspect Yankees in the Subway Series. We are still not sold they are ready to roll, but Moises Alou's return has coincided with a bit of an offensive revival.
05/13/200877
They have yet to win back-to-back games in May. This team just looks like a .500 club right now, as it has since June 1 of last year. Very disappointing if you are a Mets fan.

There is no question Santana was the missing piece. This isn't a perfect No. 1 overall pick, but they have the most potential to be dominant with no real weakness, assuming Santana can go his 230 innings. Unlike the Red Sox, they rely less on aging vets in the lineup and they should be far more motivated after last year's epic collapse.
