Alarming line from Sunday's San Diego Union-Tribune: "... a Padres executive painted a stark fiscal picture for 2009, saying club owner John Moores might shrink the payroll to $40 million." That's not a lot, especially when Jake Peavy and Khalil Greene eat up $14.5 million of that sum. Save your cards and letters; I know that Peavy's worth it. ... First Greg Maddux vetoes a deal, and now Brian Giles. Everything they say about the quality of life in San Diego must be true, and then some.

The Padres might actually have improved when Khalil Greene (.213/.260/.339) went all Kevin Brown on a clubhouse storage chest and broke his hand. ... I don't root for statistical milestones, but I would L-U-V luv luv luv to see Greg Maddux get the three wins he needs to pass Roger Clemens on the all-time list. It just seems right, is all.

The Padres have scored 6, 9, 3 and 8 runs, for a total of 26, in winning their past four games. I'm just sayin'. ... The Padres are as watchable as a fourth-generation reality-dance-contest knockoff (proposed title: You Can Dance if You Want to), but do try and tune in whenever Greg Maddux pitches. You're going to miss him when he's gone.

Jake Peavy allowed four dingers the other night. Is everything OK physically? ... Even the always-hardy S.D. 'pen has exploded: Heath Bell has allowed seven runs in his past two innings ... Padres exec Sandy Alderson the other day: "We definitely missed in our evaluation of some players this season." You think?

The development of Chase Headley is a welcome sight for a team that just has little going for it offensively outside of Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff. Scott Hairston is hot right now and might even be someone to work with now, too.

Chris Young is expected to return after the All-Star break -- just in time to replace Greg Maddux in the rotation. Maddux was quietly having a solid year before back-to-back stinkers. He really is costing the Padres some decent return before the trade deadline.

The swinging ax caught three managers last week, but Bud Black should remain safe. Granted, he is not an offensive mind, but the GM needs to do a better job of constructing an offense.

Chase Headley's arrival is the start of an offensive makeover, but it will take a lot more than him to truly turn things around.

They have found some good fortune at home and Jake Peavy is returning, but we still don't see them being a real threat. Too many things have to go right for them.
