Miguel Tejada was out of the lineup for the first time this season Thursday, and manager Cecil Cooper admits being pleased he doesn't have to play any veteran just for the sake of trying to help the player accomplish a personal goal.

Although Cooper preferred to give Tejada the complete day off, he did wind up employing him in the late innings. But he didn't feel obligated to use Tejada just for the sake of using him.

"If he had ... an 800-game streak or something rolling, well, you know, maybe we'd try to sneak him so he could continue to get that," Cooper said. "But I don't think we have one of those anymore."

Tejada entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth and stayed at short in the bottom of the inning.

Asked if he was glad not to be saddled with a situation in which a veteran was trying to stay in the lineup to keep a streak going, Cooper didn't hesitate.

"Yeah, that's kind of a relief," he said. "I know like (Phil Garner) last year, I know he had to deal with (it). Those were some tough issues he had to deal with: (a) Hall of Fame player (Craig Biggio) trying to get 3,000 (hits) and all this stuff, a lot of sacrifices that he had to make to keep him playing and all that stuff.

"The other guy (Chris Burke) suffered a little bit sitting and not playing and all that stuff. That's not an easy thing to do. That's a headache, and it's something that you really don't need."

ASTROS 8, GIANTS 7: The Astros won because Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee and Darin Erstad hit a combined three home runs for a total of five runs in the final two innings, helping the Astros pull off their 13th come-from-behind victory. They trailed 6-0 at one point. Berkman's ninth-inning shot into San Francisco Bay broke a 7-7 tie.

How long do we keep throwing this guy out there? I love his speed, and his defense is a blessing in centerfield. However, his .190 batting average is really starting to hurt. Instead of setting the table, he seems to be striking out way too much for a leadoff hitter. And other times, he seems to be flying out, which makes no sense for a guy who has the speed to beat out ground-balls.

We need ...(more)

Ok I'm sure this question will come up over the season, and into next season.  But how do you guys feel about the Tejada trade?  I got into a very long and length post conversation that was mostly a bash on me, but I stood tall and stood my ground.  I have commentary on this but I want to think what some of you have to say.  And please try not to be too biased towards the ...(more)

Down 6-0 at one point, the Astros rallied to win the game 8-7 off a Berkman BLAST that splashed into McCovey Cove. Not only was it another come-from-behind victory, but it vaulted us into second place in the NL Central behind the Cubs, who are coming to Minute Maid next week for a ...(more)

I'm happy that we only have two more late games on the west coast left this season. I'm tired of having to stay up past midnight to see the end of the game. At least we got the whole west coast 9:30 start times out of the way early. Now I'm looking forward to beating on the Rangers pitching staff this weekend!

(POLL) Well, I was listening to the FSN broadcast of Friday night's Astros @ Dodgers game 1.... and Jim Deshaies laid down some awesome stats about our Astros sluggers (strangely, Bill Brown repeated all five of the stats a few minutes later, almost as if he hadn't heard Jim say them earli ...(more)

Why do we give Tejada a day of rest when we are playing against one of the best young pitchers in the league? This sounds like something Garner would do.

I am back from a disappointing road trip to Phoenix. On 4/28 the Astros had the perfect opportunity to take out Haren, Haren was losing his control as soon as the Astros got a baserunner. 4/29 Valverde showed electric stuff striking out Burke and Byrnes. Today's game the Astros shell the "Big Unit" ...(more)

so, how crazy would it be to sign the recently released Jim Edmonds, put him on the dl for a month or so, and then bring him on board if bourn is still batting below the mendoza line mid-june?   it could buy us a playoff-experienced cf for a year while bourn adjusts to the majors, plus bpurn could still pinch-run, be a d ...(more)
