Ronny Paulino admits he was angry that he lost his starting catching job to Ryan Doumit at the beginning of the season. However, Paulino is over that anger now and ready to step in as the Pirates' primary man behind the plate with Doumit on the disabled list.

Doumit will miss at least a month and most likely six weeks after breaking his left thumb Tuesday. That means Paulino will do the bulk of the catching until Doumit gets healthy.

Doumit is hitting .350 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in 29 games.

"I feel bad for Ryan because he deserved to be playing; he was doing a great job," Paulino said. "If anything, he was pushing me to play better, and now I need to step into the lineup and do a good job, pick up where he left off."

Paulino was 2-for-5 in Thursday's 11-5 win at St. Louis and is hitting .224 with no homers and 13 RBIs in 22 games. He was the Pirates' primary catcher the previous two seasons.

"It feels good to contribute," Paulino said. "It's tough when you're not playing every day, but I've been working hard with the trainers to stay in shape. I've tried to stay ready in case I was needed, and now the team needs me again and I need to step up."

PIRATES 11, CARDINALS 5: Jason Bay's first career pinch home run couldn't have come at a better time. His three-run shot Thursday off Jason Isringhausen snapped a 5-5 tie, capped a four-run eighth inning and lifted the Pirates to their ninth win in 11 games. Bay, the Pirates' regular left fielder who did not start for just the second time this season, recorded his third career pinch hit in 13 at-bats.

Third baseman Doug Mientkiewicz and shortstop Chris Gomez, making spot starts, each had three hits and scored three runs. John Grabow (3-1) got the last two outs in the seventh inning for the victory, as the Pirates won their first series of more than two games in St. Louis since 2003 and won for the sixth time this season when trailing after six innings. Starter Ian Snell was rocked for five runs and 11 hits in four innings.

Pirates are 0-6 this season against the Cubs. Hopefully it will come to a halt over the week end  series. Now being 19-20  they have a chance to make to 500 if they take 2 out of 3. The Bucs are starting to look like a decent team now and have been worth watching latel ...(more)

Currently 6-0. I'm getting pretty tired of losing to the God damn Cubs. It's ridiculous that anyone be 0-7 against any one team.

The sweep over the Giants has given us all a lift and reason to look forward to better things to come.  However, a look at the team stats would reveal just how badly this team has played and how fortunate they are to be only 4 games under .500.

There are 30 Teams in the Major Leagues - the ...(more)

The Pirates put Ryan Doumit on the 15 day DL today and recalled Raul Chavez.  They are not sure how long he will be out.  Chavez is a great defensive catcher but his bat is a different ...(more)

Upcoming series with St. Louis at STL.
What are your thoughts?

Quick prediction from me.
Seeing that the Pirates are terrible away(6-12) and against the division(4-7) i would be happy to see one game taken away from here.  Although 3 of the wins were against Cinci, 1 was against STL. The pitching is pitchi

A winning attitude in the clubhouse. Usually it's just guys go through the motions uninspired, but now guys in the clubhouse feel good about the way they are playing and have a great attitude. I think geting Doug Mientkiewicz had alot to do with it. He's been a veteran leader in the clubhouse aswell as being pretty reliable ...(more)

I'm not sure meek should have been sent down just yet. He hadn't given up a run in 3 straight starts after a rough start. They drafted him in the rule 5 draft for a reason and said he is in their future plans. I think they cut him too quickly, but thats just me.

After watching LaRoche's futile attempt at stopping that ball that was hit by Ankiel late in the game last night, I have come to the conclusion that he is killing the Pirates not only with his bat but with his glove as well......That ball that was hit to him was 3 feet to his right and he couldnt even get a glove on it!!....... ...(more)

Is it me, or do you think it was a curious decision to have Nate McClouth sacrifice bunt in the 10th inning of the game on Tuesday night?  There was a runner on 1st with no outs, and McClouth sacrificed himself to get the runner to 2nd.  While I am all for small ball, Nate McClouth is hitting over .300 with a .600 slugging pct.  This time it worked out, but to me John Russell needs ...(more)

Trade him while his value is at its peak.  The current team is not going to win so they can stockpile some prospects if the trade is even.  With Mclouth, Mccutcheon, and Bay they have three outfielders.  Mccutcheon is tearing up in the minors and needs to be called up soon.  They need a third basemen badly because I don't think ...(more)

Van Benschoten was sent back down to AAA and his replacement is to be named tomorrow. Assuming the Pirates are going to stick with Dumatrait as a Starter for the time being I would venture to guess they will bring up another arm for middle to long relief and my money is on either ...(more)

Hey just two games under .500 winning 3 of 4 from the Braves are thing staring to look up?  We have St. Louis the Division leader and the Cubs(who we are 0-6 against), How many of theses 6 do we need to win to keep the confidence level high, I say 3-3 would be great 4-2 would ...(more)
