It's a jinx the Jays can't seem to escape as injuries to key players on their club have crippled the team's chances each of the preceding two seasons.
The loss of Wells is particularly lethal as he has been one of the few players in the lineup to have been producing at the plate. Wells was riding an eight-game hitting streak, where he has gone 12-for-29 for a .414 average.
After their opening 38 games, he is the team leader in hits (39), total bases (61), runs scored (21), home runs (five) and RBIs (24).
"He's one of the leaders on our team in just about everything," Gibbons said. "He's one of our cornerstone guys. It's a big blow but you deal with it.
"When you lose one of your top players it's always a big blow."
